Try removing the battery and leave the laptop unplugged for 5 minutes and try to boot it then.

It may just be in suspend or hibernation mode. Try holding the switch over for 2+ seconds and let us know...

Have you read the owners manual for your new laptop? It available widely for free on the Internet.

    Maybe.
    1. Remove battery.
    2. Remove power cord.
    3. Hold power switch on for 10-30 seconds. ****do this several times****

Try it with power supply only. What happens?

When turning it on....you may have to hold the switch a second or possibly two. Watch the green lights by the touchpad.

What is the full model number, type of battery and brand/voltage of power supply? Should be 15.6 volts, yellow tip on power cord.

Yes.. It should but I have seen a few weird things with several different types of laptops. Was the laptop plugged in when it died?

I have seen laptops go into suspend or hibernation and then have the battery die or be removed and it really screws up the whole system. Just try charging the battery overnight to see if it will charge up and try again in the morning.

You might have to start checking the battery connection by taking off the back plate. Maybe a bad fuse...

Pull all the drives and memory chip. See if it boots to the bios. I have seen a bad drive or memory chip prevent a computer from booting.

Yup... Screwy RAM will certainly do this... Maybe even the wifi card.

    It's worth a shot.

Ram defintely. Wifi, i dunno. I've replaced a lot of shot wifi cards, but i've never come across one that prevented the computer from booting. No matter how damaged they were. Unless its a thinkpad, but those are notorious about their wifi cards.

Recommend removing the memory. On the bottom there is a square panel with speaker in the middle. Take out the 4 screws at the corners, lift up but don't need to unplug the speaker wires. Push outward on clips at each side of the memory stick, tilt up at the top about 20 degrees, then carefully remove it. Can replace cover or just tack in with 1 screw. Try to boot up without the memory installed.

There are several fuses on the mobo, the one in your case is on the left upper side on the mobo, its a 5 amp smd fuse near the backup battery.
If you have the skills its an easy fix, but you have to unmount the mobo completely

There are no buss type fuses but there are (I think) 5 seperate fuses on the mobo.... But you would have to pull it. If you are handy and have tools it may work...

Actually I'd ask for a refund or exchange.

shrink the c: partition to, say 160gb. I know that 320gb hdds work in a mk 4 but i dunno what mk yours is. Stay on 160 to be on the safe side.

    That should fix the issue.

Google is your friend in this.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=how...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

If you don't know how to follow any of these links and instructions, then it would be best to call a friend or relative that is a little more experienced with computers to give you a hand.

Also, repartitioning may not fix it. You may have to repartition AND reinstall the OS to get it working.

You have a great durable machine that is not notorious for having so many issues. I suspect the person you are purchasing these from is a little to inexperienced to be refurbishing and reselling toughbooks to begin with. Just my 2 cents.

Just pull EASEUS partition master off the web and use that. works fine in me cf-29 and it did wonders for the old cf-27 (RIP).

Doobi: That depends on the machine. Me CF-27 (W2k SP4) didn't need a reinstall, but me CF-28 (XP SP3) did. Never tried a big enough drive to make me CF-29 bugger itself though.

I would guess that the 500gb drive is SATA. The CF-29 supports PATA, meaning there is an adapter for the interface. I would suspect a problem with the adapter. Care to share the info on the specs, seller, eBay auction, etc? Send me a PM.

A company I dealt with a while back had caddy and drive (500). Well I ordered one but before they shipped they pulled the ad for 500 and used a 320. Too many issues(BSOD) with 500. They reduced the price of course. This was the Sata pata conversion by the way.(or was it pata sata  )

    FWIW

    Jeff....suspecting the drive.....

Those pata to sata adapters are great IF you get a good one. Quality control sux and you buy 3 to find 1 good one.

I bet that's what's in it. The problems sound the same as when I was tinkering with those adapters. I was using a 120 gb drive, so I know size wasn't the problem for me. I put a 320 gb sata drive in a sata to ide caddy for the optical drive and it has never had a bit of problems in my cf51.
The same drive would not work with one of those hard drive adapters (I have 3 at the moment) in any of my cf 29's cf 50's or cf 51.

I also do have this kind of adapter but I never use it on IDE drive to permanently installed on any toughbook that has an IDE type drive. Here is my observation on it. I only use this adapter on cloning the sata hdd coz I have an ide external hhd adapter and its perfect for it and I don't need to buy a separate SATA external adapter or enclosure to do job.

1.0 The slight movement between the connector looses its integrity and can reboot your system without a warning.
2.0 Its to tight on the caddy and it has almost no absortion on the hdd and an slight impact like on transporting the unit(vibration) can coz BSOD.
3.0 Since the first time this adapter show up on this forum. I have a recommendation to re- layout the two connector on the same side of the adapter to have enough cushion on the caddy and I think one of our member done that.

Spyware is installed in programs all the time. I would do a Google search for each program and see what turns up in the way of problems for other users.

I came across this the other day. Take a peek. This was for CF-30. These drivers are NOT for your model.
If you have a properly set up unit..the drivers will be found in c:\util or \util2 on your machine as the author states.

The two times I had sound problems I used factory restore cd and the sound came on like magic. Both CF-29 Mark 4 and 5.
