I just bought this on Ebay and wanted to double check....it's my first toughbook! I'm excited.
The seller described " touchscreen needs driver since unit upgraded with backlit keyboard!" -- is that even possible? I'm A+ certified and it doesn't make sense that a new keyboard would cause a problem unless somehow the drivers conflict.
Any info? Did I get ripped off?
Also, it comes with two batteries, I assume that this model can use a "media bay battery" as I've read up on?

Yes a cf29 can use media bay batteries. The keyboard uses the same driver, backlit or not.
I would test the touchscreen right away. Use a linux live cd.. Not sure which version is best at the moment... -
Unbuntu 10.10 will work,I believe.
Also going to ask....how much $ and who is the seller, now mods if that is out of line, please delete. -
If you are having keyboard trouble ....turn the little cable over.

Replace TEST with your query.
Shawn, I am having a day here with training and all....do you remember where the picture is? No worries if you are busy.
I'll be back.Eventually.
Welcome to the soiree.

$360 and from weyrunner on eBay
It has a custom painted top lid
From the title..
toughbook cf-29 mk5 320gb 2gb wifi gps dvd-rw backlit 1.6ghz B.T. & sd
+AC ADAPTER
+2 BATTERIES
+VEHICLE CHARGER
here's the item if you can still see it..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/321368546930
It comes with WinXP, should I really boot to ubuntu? I'm a little pissed off that I have to spend another $75 bucks on the laptop because the seller probably broke it. (If I decide to keep it and order a screen, is this okay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/221398708823?lpid=82 ) He even specified through my eBay question..
"Hi, what happened, did you read my add ONLY after bidding on item? no harm, I'll try to help you out here. this is something you could have took up with me prior to purchase of an AS-IS item, especially if you are a tech, which I am not. What I AM willing to do, is REFUND your payment to paypal. I could not afford to guarantee a used computer, or parts of it and this is why I sold equipment AS-IS. I would like to resolve this prior to shipping so I may either offer a second chance to next buyer, or re-list item. I said in add touchscreen was not working, I did not say I guarantee it's function. what I will do if you like is replace the backlit screen back to the non-backlit. If that fixes the touchscreen I will send it to you that way. is that fair? or may I refund your payment? help me out here, please reply prior to the post office opening this morning."
However in his listing description...
"customized panasonic toughbook laptop cf-29 MK5 computer. rare and unique. this item equipped with 'awesome' custom painted lid, 320gb hdd, 2gb ram, 1.6ghz, windows xp pro, m.s. office, internal gps with m.s. maps, dvd-rw, sd card reader, backlit keyboard, wifi, and bluetooth. touchscreen needs driver since unit upgraded with backlit keyboard! all port covers and compartment doors are present and in good operating condition. comes with wall and vehicle power sources. this unit is NOT NEW but still nice! there are minor scuffs, normal wear and tear. all above equipment is in good working order though I have never attepted using the bluetooth, but it appears in bios. unit being sold as-is unless arrived DOA."
So this is getting sent back if I can't get the screen to work under "item not as described" -

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook Forum
This is what the CF-29 had when it left the factory
-
read this thread...it's for a cf30, but cf29 is the same. It explains the cable situation that Sadlmkr is talking about.

I would file a claim with ebay. With the response he sent you attached...It's obvious he knows that panel is bad. The line about a driver issue is to try to cover himself. You have nothing to lose by filing a claim.
Sellers have this idea that untested or As Is means they can flat out lie in the description and tough luck to the buyer. I have won more than one case of an "as-is" item turning out to be trash.....oops .sorry for rant....deceptive sellers really p*ss me off.
If he is offering a full refund, TAKE the refund and I am sure an ad in the Buy sell trade section here will get you a better unit.
Yes boot ubuntu..from the cd...you don't have to install it...It will run without modifying anything on the hard drive..matter of fact you can totally remove the hdd. -

Yes this is a NON TOUCH unit unless the seller took the top half (lid) off of a touchscreen unit. The 29 you won is showing 2GB memory and that is the way the non touch came from the factory or the memory could be upgraded too. The 29 touchscreens only came with 1.5GB memory. Now maybe the seller did not know this. He does have very good feedback (100%) .

What a load of horse hockey this guy is giving you, make sure he pays return shipping,if not file a case. The 3 after CF-xx3 always means factory non-touch for 29's and 30's.
These sellers burn me up. -
Alright, contacted the guy and said I know hes lieing and I want a refund NOW and will be returning the item unopened right when it arrives. I said we can do this that way or I can file a claim ruining your ebay profile.
I'd like to get a CF 30 now...
2GB+
Touch screen
Backlit RUBBER keyboard
Wifi
GPS
Win XP or Win 7
Charger
2 batteries (one media bay battery)
if any of you have the above computer I'd be happy to take it off your hands, I have $450 max to use. -
As above, return it and file a claim. There are many people on this site that can provide a turn key unit with working touchscreen for around what you paid.
Here's another ad by the same seller, very very disappointing to say the least:
CF 30 Backlit Toughbook w 120 GB HDD 1 5 GB RAM DVD Win XP WiFi as Is | eBay

Nice, this joker is doing the "I'm too dumb to know if it works" routine, selling junk then shrugs his shoulders when it barely boots to bios.
EBay is full of them -
I can speak for me and a cupla of my "guys". We don't do junque.
We will not be cheaper than ebay.
When you get your unit to your specifications....it will be a turn-key deal.
If you are interested in not being "messed" with send me a PM. For the unit you spec'ed
(CF-29) I can do for $450. plus shipping. (they keep raising the rate)
I have any Mark CF-29 btw. (By the way)
Mark 1 CF-30. Several GPS models. Lovely low hour units. XP COA $499/offer. (PM)
Mark 2 CF-30. Several GPS models. A few more hours but still pristine. Vista COA $599(PM)
I hate this part...adding Windows 7 adds $150 to the cost. (I think I can get COA's for +- $125.) The price just went up.
CF-30 MK1 will take 4Gb Ram. CF-29 1.5 to 2.0. 32 bit Windows uses max +- 3.25 Ram.
That's about it for now.
