I wonder if you fellas could help me.

Recently received my CF-29 ETKGZKM for use with topographical mapping softwear. Bit of a chore as most recyclers won't ship to Canada.

Just tried Heartland for Recovery Discs but they don't have them in stock and "won't likely have them". Panasonic were likewise unable to help. Ebay lists CF-29 discs with a photo of CF-28 discs, "not sure which model" and "As Is". (Probably don't ship to Canada, anyway)

Have struggled with WinPE unsuccessfully. Seems nLite and UBCD4 require a set of discs to start with. (Understand copyright issues in the dark side.)

    Appreciate any help. jbtbforumattelus.net.

Thanks for any and all help,

    Jeff.

You can always install Win XP Pro and then load the drivers.. It takes a few hours to do it instead of 30 minutes but that's how a lot of us did it for a LONG time before we purchased our recovery disks. (Or got them with our Toughbooks.) I know it isn't what you wanted to hear... But if waiting for disks is going to slow you down... You can use any Win XP Pro installation CD and the COA on the bottom of your laptop and install everything.

Thanks Cap - my address is jbtbforum at telus dot net. I believe I have been pointed in the right direction by a generous forum member who responded to my plea.

And, thanks, Toughbook. Recovery discs would be helpful if the system crashes out in the desert. That said, I will take the XP S2 disc and will grab the drivers on a second disc and hope I don't need to sit out in a sandstorm reloading so I can read the map that my GPS is interfaced with!

    Fantastic forum, thx!

    Jeff.

I doubt that's legal, and I'm pretty sure it's against forum policy.

    Read this thread before posting

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=351660

We do not talk about downloads or copy’s on this forum as its not permitted

The only restore media that can be discussed here is the Panasonic restore disks (which are perfectly legal)

For the newest models they can be obtained from Heartland Services
For older models like the cf-28 they sometimes come up on eBay or look in our buy and sell section as they sometimes are available from forum members there

Ok, sorry didn't know that, as I've seen the links to drivers, So I've assumed that restore CDs will fall under that category as well ...

The site administrators here have it in their minds that the oem restore disks are magic windows disks, that can be installed on anything without the worry of registration or product key, and will not allow talk about them here

The truth is that the drivers and the restore disks have security features built-in that will allow installation only on the correct Panasonic model and series so I personally don’t see an issue

But I’m not the boss. the moderators and administrators are. so as I said we don’t talk about the disks here

I see, thanks I know now OEM Windows disks won't work for long as well (30 days), as it's require activation. but I see your point, maybe one of my option would be to compile my own restore disks as I've heard it possible to do your own windows install disks with correct drivers and soft, as lons as you have a valid windows cd, here is some info on how to do it, http://www.maximumpc.com/article/How-To--Slipstream-your-XP-installation

maybe if I have time, I'll try doing it this weekend, and create nice tutorial on how to do it, I wonder if I can ask what original software came with toughbook? like what application has been used for navigation, etc, etc.

    Thanks again.

On your models the optional software ,besides the driver files and applications you can find from the Panasonic downloads area is
    Abobe Reader

    Thats it

Navigation software ,dvd playback and cd writing software is not included

There is a benefit from not having a bloated load like a Dell lol

    Alex,
Dell restore disks install the operating system and 1 small Dell folder which you immediately delete. All the bloat is on the second disk which I don't use. The XP SP3 load is just shy of 1.7GB.
Vitaliy, OEM disks will activate with your COA key as will Dell restore disks. If you don't have a COA, don't load the software. With the exception of the tablet Toughbooks, the installation of the drivers takes from 40 mins. to an hour and a half depending on the model.

Thank you, my other question would be, is it possible for example delete all unnessesary stuff from WIN xp cd, like drivers for divices that would never go to toughbook, games and msn messenger, also I understand that it's perfectly legal to use your other oem cds to install windows on other machine, as long as you use COA that came with the laptop you have. for example, I have COA for xp pro on my cf29, and I can use the cd which came with my dell to install XP-pro, and activate it with laptops COA. As I've bought laptops without restore disks, it's kind of a drag to Install drivers and other stuff from scratch everytime you have to reinstall the system. I think I'll look more into compiling my own restore cd, as I've heard it was done before, that way, I can have all of my programs, drivers and settings, which would install with one time installation.

    Anyone done it here?

    thx,

    Vitaliy.
