I need a little help from you masters of all things toughbook. I have a cf-29 1.2ghz 1.25gb RAM and all of a sudden the other night it decided not to run on the AC adapter anymore. I metered the AC adapter and its output is as it should be. It will run on its battery but the computer won't charge the battery or power itself from the AC adapter. I need help....

Try another adapter if possible. The adapter may have enough voltage while disconnected, but it may drop with the load connected.

Hmm..I seem to remember someone mentioning a microfuse soldered on the MB of a toughbook. I don't know which model, but I imagine they all have one. The cheepo repair I have in mind is to pick up an external battery charger. Not sure which one you need for a CF 29. I got a VCBTB1W for my CF 50 from fleabay for a reasonable price. Just a quick thought, did the battery take a dump? Try the adapter with the battery removed.

The external battery charger for the CF-29 is the CF-VCBTB1U.

It charges both the main and Media Bay batteries; even both at the same time.

The VCBTB1W will work with a CF-29 battery. Question, when it "suddenly" stopped working what else was happening? Child pulling on cord, tipping up on side while plugged in to get at something on the left side of computer? It is highly unlikely that a fuse blew without some noticeable event. Ohlip is your guy if you are looking for a fuse, but I would take a good look at the ac power socket.

It was sitting on an ottoman not plugged in and slipped off 18 odd inches to the floor. After that it had no cowbell. I'll open it up and look for a fuse. or some other noticable damage inside.

Last night after I signed off I thought about the A/C adapter socket also. They go bad often on laptops and are relatively simple and cheap to replace. I would look there first.

Look for one of Ohlip's posts on fuses, download a schematic you find by looking in the stickies, in short its all been done before. For the ac socket, find it. look at it, wiggle it, test it with a meter to be sure it is connected to the mother board solder tabs. Good luck,

You can check the DC Adapter with a DVM to make sure you have continuity. Look for broken solder joints... Which I doubt you have. Cap has it right..... Download a service manual and schematic and check fuses..... But if all this was caused by a small drop? I don't know if a fall would cause a fuse to blow. Maybe the battery connector on the motherboard?
