    Hi Again,

I've got my CF-28 up and running and my brother is eying it with a smigeon of envy. He's going off to college soon (Bachelors in Science, Chemistry Major) and is wanting to grab a laptop to do work on, he's fallen into the "is 1.2 Ghz going to be enough?" trap. My question is, is it going to be enough? He'll be running a few processes on it like Gromacs as well as internet browsing and word processing. He would like a machine that would last him two or three years without upgrading. With XP being thrown out the door (he refuses to go to linux) it's getting a bit tougher to tell.

If he goes for the CF-29, who should I get it from? I'm looking at getting it before Mid-April, the main seller of CF29s on ebay right now seems to have pretty disappointing details on his lots, and the others seem a bit sketchy, I would prefer a buy it now.

    Thanks,
    Josha

There are several sellers on ebay that have a great reputation. You just need to be choosy! Check out their feedback and make sure they have sold something similar in the past with 100% feedback on that item. There are some selers on ebay that have old Sprint and Comcast laptops that are branded with their logos. I'm not sure I would want one like that. Also... Beware of sellers that don't have ANY pictures or use stock photos... Make sure they have it IN HAND and not "In the warehouse" where they don't even know what you will get!

    Just my too scents!

First, may i know the performance of your unit and what kind of mod....that have you done on it at present time.

Second, the cf-29 right now is still in high price. I've just scored recently but its a barebone unit( top of the line running at 1.6ghz, cf-29N) and i am now on the process of gathering the missing ingredients. But still I can use at the moment using linux kanotix live cd and its great.

    Ohlip,

Haven't really got into modding all that heavily right now, I just have it working for what I need it for (for now): A barebones workstation. I have parts slowly trickling in for antenna mods (I already have the Engenius card in there, thank you Gravitar) and GPS mods, I'm just running into a few other things that are tying up my finances. I hope to have at least the wifi mods all spiffed up by mid april, as well as maybe a slow start on the GPS mods.

My brother is in a safer situation moneywise then me, he just got a semester scholarship to university (that's why he's looking into buying a laptop).

Bit off topic here: Are RIM boards hard to find for the GPS mod? I don't have one in my unit right now, I see one on Ebay hovering around at $10 but they rarely pop up on there.

I don't know how things are at his school but he should check to see what the computer requirements at the school and what compatibility issues might be. A CF-29 might be sufficient now but in 2 or 3 years time it probably won't have the horsepower you need to run the applications that might be required for the school. It will be more than enough to do everyday stuff probably.
