I have a CF-29 that has begun to flicker and then the screen dims. Sometimes it boots normally and other times it flickers and goes dim. Once it goes dim I can close and open the screen quickly and the screen will flicker and then return to dim. Sometimes closing and opening the screen will return the CF-29 to normal state. I thought about the backlight or the inverter, but the screen returns to normal. Tapping on the back of the screen will also make it go dim. I'm leaning toward a loose connection because of how it responds when the screen is closed and open, but where. Any input would be appreciated.

    How dim?
If its just a bit dimmer it might be a loose conection on the ac adapter switching power properties in windows

It's either a backlight or loose connection. Easy enough to check.

Did you pay your electrical bill? Lol. Don't be offended. Sometimes we are making some fun here. just kidding. Ok! serious now! When the screen is at normal stage is it in redish condition or in bright normal condition. If it is in normal condition as bright as summer the trouble is on the inverter board. the inverter board has a black carbon rectangular shape bar which control the voltage. It has four leg wire around 5mm in lenght which are soldered to pcb board and on the bar. It has certain glue on solder point as an insulator. Check all of it and i am pretty sure one or two of it has a loose solder or out of contact. Resolder if you find it. Use extra cuation as this bar is easy to break. Its so brittle. Don't twist or bend it. All power must be off. no battery installed or ac plug.

Tom, the backlight dims completely. Toughbook, in your experience, does the backlight come and go at random? It may work for hours to days before going dim. At other times it goes dim immediately. When it is working normally it is bright and clear, no hint of dim. I was leaning toward a loose connection or bad ground. Any "specific" suggestions on where to look. I have never had a CF-29 do this.

As I posted above. Its the answer to your trouble. If you can't do it by yourself , look for someone who has the capability to disassemble and check all of the above mentioned component.
