I haven't had time to try to duplicate this so I am coming to the largest AND MOST POPULAR Panasonic Toughbook information database....

I sold a CF-29 1.3GHz model. The thing was mint...Seriously... My customer said that he knows that the external speaker worked fine when it was delivered but that shortly afterwards... He started using a headset plugged into the back of the laptop. He said that worked great. However... After removing the headset jack... He got no sound from the external speaker. I know this is an easy fix. It has nothing to do (supposedly with the Fn keys. He says they all "show" they work fine and respond to his touch... Just no sound.

I told him that he can always send it back to me to fix.. But if there is some little holy nugget I can toss his way... I'd rather do that as he doesn't really want the downtime. I could swear I read about this before but couldn't find it on search.

I guess its the lever switch within the headphone socket that doesn't move when he pull the plug. Advice him to plug it in again(headphone) and wigle a bet and then pull it out. The headphone socket has a builtin lever switch that when you plug a headphone the internal speaker will be off. On this case its permanently in contact within the line for outside use. I don't how to explain it properly but it is a piece of metal bar that act like a spring.

    See the schematic.

    Rick -

I will usually spray a short little puff of silicone spray lube in the jack then run a headphone plug in & out several times; this usually sorts things right quick.

Careful inspection with a flashlight will sometimes reveal a bit of plastic shaved from the insulating areas of the plug has gotten stuck in the switch area of the jack; this seems especially prone to happen with iPod headphones.

He's sending it back... Again. He loved it when he got it... Then he copied a bunch of files and stuck them in the wrong spot. When he rebooted the Toughbook thought he was the Admin on his old desktop. I reimaged and sent it back out N/C.... Now this... We'll see... I'll keep you posted. He's a really nice guy so I don't mind at all...

Try this, I have used it on cf-19s and cf-29s that played sound only from the headphone jack

    add remove programs

    uninstall hotkey appendix
    uninstall hotkey manager

if it says some files cannot be removed without rebooting, you usually can ignore them (if not do it all again without ignore)

    reboot

sound should work at this point this last step is to make the hotkeys work again

then goto c:\utils (by default) or where your drivers are and launch setup.exe in hotkeymanager and hplsman folders

i think it has something to do with windows because the speaker works when i boot in linux...

    cheers

If he installed new drivers or software he may have enabled the option to mute the onboard speakers when a headset is plugged in. I have seen it in the past where the swap back didnt work.
