Haha, thanks for the welcomeI have a CF-29HTM50BM. I was able to put an unlocked 3g card that's connected to the integrated antenna. So i'm a happy camper!
I'm not sure if its just me or not, but I found another odd problem. The cpu scaling in 10.04 is really messed up for me. I only get about 800-1100mhz ( should be 1400) when i do anything cpu intensive no matter what "mode" it's set in. I believe it to be a kernel problem. It works fine in 2.6.30 or lower on ubuntu and puppy. I'm upgrading right now to 10.10 alpha 2 just to see if i'm still having this problem in a newer kernel. Did anyone else notice this?
-
Mine jumps from 600MHZ to 1.4. Spends a lot of time at 600. I am using the monitor from the add to panel gizmo. Presently set "on demand". Could you be having a heating issue? There is a temperature monitor available in package manager.
Jeff -
Hmm... mine does the same thing but when I change it to "performance" it'll shoot to 1.4 until I actually do something, then it'll drop! When I play music or open a youtube video it'll drop from 1.4 to 1.1 or 900. The more I'm doing the lower and slower it gets? I notice flash videos stutter significantly when it drops below 1.1 so I'm assuming it's accurate. I'm on ubuntu using the frequency monitor applet.
Does yours have any odd behavior switching it to 'performance' and running something? -
Something is tickling my memory and I don't know ......wait a minute.
Since I rarely "run anything" it is hard to tell. I do have stuttering audio at times and did not relate that to the settings on CP Scaling Monitor. I'll keep an eye on it.
Back to heat...do CPU's scale themselves under high heat conditions? I thought I read that.
Will investigate.
Jeff -
I think heat is irrelevant in terms of the scaling? If the cpu got too hot to function properly, it would just shut off automatically. The frequency wouldn't matter if it wasn't too hot. Plus my bios says the cpu is "normal tempurature" for what its worth. I thought speedstep was usually controlled by the bios, but I couldn't find anything in the menu to disable it. Too bad because that would have ruled a lot out.
Also maverick 10.10 alpha 2 has 2.6.35 on it, and I didn't notice anything different with the scaling. But at least the video works perfectly again without modifications -

Cloned my CF29 drive (Ubuntu 10.04) to my new CF18. (Both have identical Transcend 16GB SLC SSD's)
CF-18BHAZXDM
The touchscreen worked out of the box after the clone, I had to change the minx, maxx, maxy, miny values in your 69-evtouch.conf file, and it works almost perfectly.
Anybody know if the CF18 has a wireless switch? Hardware or software? Ubuntu sees the Intel 2100 card, but it reports it as disabled. I checked the BIOS and it is up and running there.
Is it some fn+F key combination?
I would also like to figure out how to use the buttons on the side, the display brightness work fine and probably use hardware. But the other four use software buttons, and those will need a little work.
I will keep working on it!

Here's a bit by 9. Page 2 Toughbook and Linux thread.
-
I'm guessing you will need to swap the hot key diver to a CF-18 version as the front (side) buttons are completely different than the regular hot key buttons on the non-tablet Toughbooks. If you were using XP this would require a complete reload as you don't seem to be able to add those drivers unless you do it in the EXACT right order. In Linux I have no idea if you will be able to find the drivers or if it will be more forgiving loading in Linux. A lot of us had a lot of trouble with those buttons when we first messed with the tablets a little over a year ago.

I like to run the latest kernel version because fixes may have been instituted that apply to your system.
Jeff -
Thanks you Gork, for this thread.
I did an apt-get for evtouch, created sudo gedit /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/69-evtouch.conf and filled it with the contents you list in the original post. One reboot and I've got Xubuntu 10.04 touch working with both Gnome and Enlightenment E16.
I tweaked your min and max X and Y just a bit and now my pointer is dead on no matter where I lay my finger or stylus.
Option "minX" "314"
Option "minY" "288"
Option "maxX" "4003"
Option "maxY" "3886"
These are the perfect settings for my screen. -
Thank you for the validation post. Good show!
I set one up last night with just the min and max numbers from the four corners. Worked dandy.
Jeff -
After tinkering with it for hours I decided to swap in another wifi chip, lo and behold it works!
Now I have it hooked up to my serial GM-45 Geiger counter and I can check for radiation on the go, and while uploading the data at wifi hotspots.
Geiger Counter Nuclear Radiation Monitor Detector Alpha Beta Gamma X-Ray
I checked my friends new granite countertops and they have little flakes of something fun. (3mR/hr radiation emission @ 1" away, 12000CPM)
I get about an hour of runtime on it now, since the counter is powered off of the serial bus. Might need a new battery soon, as I don't know how old this one actually is.
Ubuntu does not power down the serial bus when I close the radiation program (Running the windows radiation program in Wine) but otherwise everything is working great!

I am bumping this to make it easier to locate as I am working PM with a TBer with a CF-29L installing Ubuntu 10.04. This is from the middle of this thread edited with a few comments hopefully for clarity for a first time Ubuntu/Linux user.
1. Upgrade Ubuntu if you have not already and re-boot. Important.
2.
5. O.K. what will happen next is when you do the following and touch the screen
As a start touch the four corners of the screen briefly. Don't panic just look for the line with absolute x and y. You will then enter the four numbers you obtain in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/69-evtouch.conf. If you carefully pick out four numbers you like and write them down you can:
For tweaks
Good luck. -
GORK!!!!
You are the man!!! I got it really close to what I need.... I think I am starting to get the hank of this...
Ever need any help with a toughbook on Win7 just let me know...
By the way, a COPRACER is what happened to me and a buddy when we were in High School, we drag (street) raced a COP (that was off duty in his personal Mustang GT) and he was mad he lost!!! So he flashed his badge and asked if we wanted to keep or license?? So that is how COPRACER became a new name...
Thanks again for all your help..
~COPRACER~ -
Excellent. Keeping changing one number at a time in tens and 15's and you will get it spot on.
NOW.......stick the disk/stick in that CF-30 and give us a report.
Jeff -
Just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 on a CF-29LQQGCBM.If you follow Gorks instructions it
works without a hitch.I hopefully will be able to contribute something as I move forward. Thanks

pakratt,
Welcome to the forum and thanks for the validation report. You did say 10.10? We'll look forward to hearing of your Toughbook adventures.

Hey Gork! great guide! Although I ran into some trouble...
It all came to a crashing halt when I closed the lid. The screen was black when I reopened it and had to do a hard shutdown. Upon reboot wireless and wired internet doesn't work anymore and isn't listed in ifconfig.
Anyone have thoughts on this? -
Check the Bios and make sure the wlan is enabled and don't close the lid anymore.
That is the one or two things Linux has never been good at. I assume your hard boot is pull the battery? Been there. You can google around or whatever on the switch issue but so far I haven't seen an answer. I have been successful a couple times with holding the switch hard over for till it makes (I forget) several beeps and flashes. Also try opening the lid and turning it off with the switch. I've done that too. There ya go. You asked for thoughts and I wrote them down as they fell out of my head.
You a Chief?
Jeff -
Oh, I forgot.........I set my lid preferences in the battery gizmo to shutdown if the lid is closed,... since suspend and hibernate are sketchy at best.
Good luck. Welcome to the fracas.
Jeff -
Looking around I haven't been able to find anyone else having this problem I just assumed it worked for everyone else.
Your one of the few to ask, nope, my ex's user name had always been Th3Fir3 so mine had always been Fir3Chi3f. It's much more fun to role play a fireman than it is to be one, they have a rough job. -
lspci lists the wireless card and the network card:
Code:Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2915ABG [Calexico2] (rev 05) Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 19)
-
Did you check System Preferences Network Connection?
Also post code: -
Friend of mine's dad is a fireman but hes on disability from a wall falling on him and two firefighters died this morning not too far from my house. Two Chicago Firefighters Killed, 15 Injured After Collapsed Building Traps Firefighters Battling Blaze - ABC News I hope you have continued luck with the fires you have been fighting.
Anyway, System Preferences Network Connection listed my wireless network but wasn't of any help. I was looking for some way to 'link' eth0 and wl0 to the actual adapters, sort of like the method used to get Atheros wireless cards working.
I've gotten too frustrated with it however and installed 10.10 netbook remix. So far it looks like hibernate works but its just the live CD. I'll post back when everything is up to date. -
Missed this until now. I've been fighting a Atheros card all evening on a new install. I'm going back to the Intel card tomorrow if something doesn't happen soon.
Jeff -
Hey Chi3f.....In my travels (google)I found where one guy took the card out and re-inserted it and all was well. So.......
1. Pull your power. All of it.
2. Pull the card.
3. Hold the switch on for a bit to reset the innards.
4. Put it back together after smooshing your thermal pads.
Never tried this but I've seen it discussed. Also FWIW in bios set all to defaults.
I shut down Linux with [Ctrl][Alt][Del] or you can go to the top bar right click, add to panel and there is a deal there to power off.
Jeff...... my wireless is working now and in case Rob reads this I got the mouse jumping thing fixer and installed it before enabling the gps. -
What a thread! Ive been trolling around for info on how to get my cf28 touchscreen working with Ubuntu. All my machines are Linux but i am no guru. If i keep tossing my Toshiba around in the car while i tune my megasquirt, its gonna break. Any ideas?
-
Yeah, I have an idea.
1. Download and burn Ploplinux 4.1.0 iso
2. Burn above to either CDROM or Floppy. I think it will fit the floppy.
3. Download Linux 10.10 desktop to another computer.
4. Make a Live USB of 10.10. The instructions are on the 10.10 site.
5. Boot your CF-28 with Ploplinux.
6. Stick the USB in the CF-28 and select the menu entry for USB of course.
Wait a bit and you should be loaded. Read this entire thread. The one you are looking for is the post concerning the settings for cf-28. I think it's here someplace.
Bottom line is the Ploplinux jumpstarts the USB. And you need the USB because 10.10 is too big for a CD or something like that.
You will have to play with it a bit. I have done this on a CF-29 MK 2 that has no option to boot from USB. It worked slick. Ploplinux has a lot of information on their pages also.
LET ME KNOW.
Jeff
EDIT: Ploplinux has a setting to force USB 1.?. also. -
I thought I was in the 10.10 thread. Hmmphh. Read both threads, don't mix and match.
Welcome to the nithouse. (sic)
