    hi

after using about 2/3 hour, my CF-29 Mk4 feel very warm all around the body. Everywhere I touch it it is very warm.

I want to know is this normal for the laptop.
Is that the trade-off for the laptop that have the cover all around?

Btw, it runs quiet, absolutely quiet that I don't hear or feel anything.

Probably normal. Fully rugged models like the CF-29 use a passive heat transfer bar to cool the CPU, which transfers heat to the outer case making it warm to the touch. Very quiet since there is no cooling fan -- and very reliable.

    That's normal :D

If you turn the bios to high temperature it will load the battery only to 80%

The max temp i got on my cf 29 is about 60 celcius

do you only download the cpu thermometer program, as it offers to run a diagnostic prior to downloading this program. am just being overly cautious, thanks, Driller

Yeah that's way too hot. Recommend pulling the bottom cover to make sure the gray heat transfer material is in place and looking soft & wet, not dry & cracked.

You *MUST* use the gray stuff. The heat sink will only touch the CPU with the right thickness in the gap. Your CPU is probably not touching anything -- Stop Using It Now!

There was a thread a while back on the grey stuff -- find it and read it, then email one of the guys who bought a bunch extra. Or pm to member Toughbook. Or pm me -- can't stand to see a Toughbook die needlessly ....

I must learn that control/c thing, let me start again, what are the normal operating temps for mk 3,4 5's, so far mine have been 28-34C what I call normal surfing etc, when go to adding software like kapersky off cd and upgrading off internet simultaneously charging while on ac power, temps get up to 54C on the mk 4-5's. any one know specs on these temp ranges, like if playing cd/dvd or just plain charging mode. using cputhermometer.com freeware danrosten recommended, TB asked once was I monitoring drive temps or cpu temps, are there programs to do both? just trying to get a feel for these trusty little laptops to use at home/work, let my business support my hobbies! any ideas or recommendations? Driller

That's a good question and I hope someone that knows something responds. Mark 3 charging and tapping the HDD once in a while 48c right now. I am glad to hear your report on 4-5's mine was up to 52c then back probably average 50. But I would like to see a comparison with the 5400x320 v.s. 5400x160 v.s.5400x80. My feeling is the 320 is a bit warmer. You agree?
FWIW I'm using Linux Mint and it has a built in temp monitoring system. Where the thermometer is located in beyond me.....or I haven't taken the time to find out.
    O.K. bottom line question.
    Respectfully submitted,
    Gork!
    p.s. what's the control c thing?

Whaaa? When I got my CF-29 and first had it apart I noticed the thermal transfer material (looks like un-cured epoxy) was cracked. I bought some Artic Silver paste to replace it with.

I knew the gap would be critical so I slathered it on pretty thick and went slow when I tightened the screws back down on the case (to let it squish out). My CPU temp runs 61C at idle and 85C at 80% usage.

    Did I screw up?

Edit: I just remembered that I had looked up the thermal specs for the Pentium M chip. It shows a MAX temperature of 100C. And doesn't the Pentium M throttle itself back if the temp goes out of spec? If you guys are getting those lower temps with this "gray stuff" then I definitely want some.

sounds like temps are too high, check wit TB or one of the other sages, could be need the thermal conductor pad or "gray stuff", on the cpu and other areas that use it as a thermal heat sink, Driller

 YES! You are putting your machine at risk of damage! 85°C is very hot! (185°F)!! I do believe this is outside normal operating temperature.

As mentioned in a previous post, 80°C (176°F) is too hot 85°C even more so. Arctic Silver is designed to be a very thin layer between two flush mounted objects filling in microscopic pores. The gap in the Toughbook is ±0.5mm, THEY DO NOT TOUCH! The liquid paste by design will become quite thin and run when heated by the chips and will likely not not stay in good contact with the surfaces in this application, if at all.
NOT recommended to run machine at these temps.

My MK4 was running really hot the other day. I have not yet felt one this hot, though I rarely do CPU & GPU intensive things on them.
My daughter was playing a game for an hour or two. Not sure of the temp as I do not yet have a monitoring app installed.

the CPU thermometer isnt acurate. it will start a 37 and get stuck at 37 even when the bottom is pretty warm/hot . i would restart the laptop and it would show a different # (alway higher).... right now i have a fan blowing at the bottom that keep it super cool.

If you need a fan to keep it cool you have a problem! I can't see in the thread where you have replaced the thermal pads as has been suggested. If you care about your computer I highly suggest you correct the problem. Panasonic has invested a ton of engineering in their passive cooling and there isn't a lot of wiggle room for "shade tree" modifications to this part of the system. Just my $0.02 but I would do the simple fix and put it back the way Panasonic built it.

You can put the pads back on with a little silver or ceramic paste... But you cannot use the past alone.... It will just ooze away as it warms up and you will overheat. There is like a 1mm gap you need to span.

Yeah I would go with the A.S. ceramic based paste as it's thicker and has 0 capacitance. The silver based one while not conductive is not recommend where it may come in contact with electrical pathways, more here.

    No kidding!
My daughter was playing a game for a couple of hours the other day on the MK4 29 and the thing was quite hot when she was done! I haven't run any CPU & GPU intensive apps on it yet so this was a first for me. I'm gonna install one of those temp monitoring apps to check it out.

I realize I'm in need of new thermal pads.
