hello all.. found this forum on google searching for a solution to a cf-29 issue im having

I had to pull the hardrive out to scan it for virii and malware. So as you know when you pull the hd out your in for a suprise if you have never opened a toughbook up and looked at the hd. I successfully get through the "toughbook packaging" btw love the styrofoam inserts... i get through hook it to a usb to ide cable.. scan with kaspersky and malware bytes i dont find anything

fast forward... put the "toughbook packaging" or cage back on the hardrive... pop it into the laptop and plug in the power cable. I get the orange light but when i try to flip the power switch it goes out. Im like I pull the cable and try to run it off the batteries. No lights no luck and no POST. I then switch batteries with a know good toughbook--no luck. I then switch power supplies with known good toughbook-- no luck. I then take the hd and try to put it in another toughbook and then the good toughbook wouldnt start. I popped the hd back in and the good toughbook started up. Hope i havent lost you yet. I started to think there was some security setting similar to car audio and you have to match up the hd with the toughbook but i dont think thats the case.. i think the other toughbook is kinda f*ckd up too

I think there are three possibilities or combination of things wrong with this toughbook

    1) I fried it with ESD.. when i put the drive back in. My room is very staticy and the place where im at is not properly grounded. I fried the motherboard

    2) the power switch is broken...... the actual button you have to slide right to turn on ... im thinking this may be the problem

    3) power issue... i took a multimeter to the power supply and its reading 16.2 volts.. im guessing its supposed to be more at 18 v's im not sure on this...

right now im going to try the suggested tips in this thread.. i dont know why it was closed.

found the problem... the adaptor piece... not sure what you call it... was not seated... i left a row of pins uncovered by that adaptor piece that goes over the IDE pins... problem solved

    HI,
As I read your post the connector was my first thought. I installed mine off one pin to the side. Difficult to see and I screwed it up. But no damage.

It's a pretty tough book to survive some of our idiot errors. Glad yours is now working.

The Toughbook is hearty inside AND out... I've done a lot of bonehead moves over the years while experimenting and found that the Toughbook motherboard, et al, survives just about everything... Unless you are REALLY trying to mess it up!
