I hope I'm not breaking any of your forum rules/taboos, but I've never used your threads before. I checked a few stickies, so I think I'm good to post this here. I also did not see his topic posted, if this has already been answered, please direct me with a link and I will gladly read up.
My issue:
We replaced the disc drive in my boss's Toughbook thinking that the old one had simply died for whatever reason. Now we can't get the durn thing to even acknowledge that the new drive is in.
I am not exceedingly computer savvy, so please use laymen's terms in your answers or else I'll be just as lost as I am now.
Info I have is as follows:
The cd rom we installed is a Panasonic, but we are currently still trying to figure out why the rom won't read, so I haven't turned it off to get the info off the case itself. If you really need this I can get it.
OS: Windows XP
Model: CF-29ETP20KM
Thank you in advance to whoever can help.

That's an interesting one. Personally for the price of a CF-29Mk5 (yours is a MK2) or a CF-30Mk1 which will run circles around it I would replace it. But lets see what the guys have to say.Hailyx likes this. -
We are looking into that. As we have already replaced a few things like battery and charger. Now the disc drive. And looking around in the extensions it looks like other things might not be working as well, but we are not technically savvy, so we're just not sure.

I assume that you replaced the drive that is inside the caddy (plastic and metal thingy that slides in)
-
If you did, then the problem is that the new drive is a slave drive. The original was and needs to be a master.
-
You would be correct. We ordered the whole part that comes out. There were no screws or anything like that, just pop the drive out and put the new one in.

I have no clue what that means. -
Ok.
I missed a post of yours.
Where did you get the replacement drive? -
Caddy and drive. We didn't take anything apart. It came out and slid the new one right back in. The new one came in the caddy.
-
Coworker bought it from a website. The email from them says "Bob Johnson's Computer Stuff, Inc."
-
I'm going to again say best to replace the unit as that thing is older then dirt,a couple of the guys here have turn key ready to go units that will be in great shape and work correctly.
-
Ok. I think my coworker has the boss talked into it anyways.
-
Bob Johnson is a good seller. Contact him about the drive. I am sure he will send another and make it right.
I have a nice CF31 mk2 if you really want to jump up some. I will make a good deal. It is complete and ready to go.

Does the cd-rom show up in the BIOS ? My feeling is the problem is not the cd-rom but something internal .
