I used to post here a LONG time ago...

    I have a CF-29....

long ago I added a rubber keyboard, second battery and bigger HD.

now, I've returned from Iraq, swapped the 160GB HD for a 60GB SSD drive, swapped the back pannel of the LCD(had a crack), and replaced a few worn port covers.

I also purchased an internetal GPS kit from panasonic. I've got it all together, and it shows up in the bios, but the only problem is windows thinks its a serial mouse, and it keeps moving my mouse around..

looks like I need drivers. I can't get my GPS software to recognize this as a GPS device either. So where do I go from here???

Read the sticky on page 1 regarding adding GPS to a 29. This is a known issue with the serial ball mouse and GPS and there are literally dozens of threads on how to resolve this. You can also google "serial ball mouse and GPS issues on a toughbook" and just follow all results that lead to this forum.

ps. Welcome back Yut and OORAH!!

You say you are using the stock OEM yes. If that is so, and it is showing up in BIOS and on Com3, I would verify your antenna hook up. You can also try a different test utility like GPSinfo, or WinFast Navigator to see if it duplicates..

Winfast won't even show up com3, but it shows up in windows hardware manager.

I got a program called GPS viewer, still, nothing. I shelled out around $350 for this thing from heartland.

    Ok. Sorry, from the top.

    Is it enabled in BIOS?
Does it show up in GPSinfo (this will scan ALL com ports)
Do you have the Panasonic GPS (Device?) installed; this will show up under "System Devices" in your Device manager.

    Would this help?

Get back to us as soon as you can.

    try this link.. http://toughbooktalk.com/public_downloads/index.php?dir=NR%20Contributing%20Members/Doobi/

and click on the simple sled install pdf.

But, as a side, if it is showing up in BIOS, but not being recognized in software, one thing I would check is the sled. Remember that thin 12c flat cable that connects the GPS board to the Sled Board, if one of those ends is UPSIDE down, you will see this problem. And it will most likely be the end on the GPS board, so tuck that in under itself (shiny side up I believe) and try again. The fact that the BIOS sees it tells me the cable to the Sled is probably correct, so the BIOS knows there is something connected, but since the GPS board side is wrong, its not sure WHAT is connected. Check out the PDF and the Sled setup and get back to us. (I've been down this OEM GPS setup MANY times so hopefully can walk you through it)

the PDF was for a modem, the GPS(or at least what they gave me) is a tad diffrent, but your explination makes a lot of sense, I've checked the small ribbon a few times, It at least looks good...

give me a min to get some photos for you. I haven't put the copper tape on yet, would that be an issue??

It looks hooked up correctly. The 12c ribbon cable is folding in on itself at the PCB and is plugging into the GPS board correctly. But, what I cannot tell, is if the cable is inserted "shiny" side up. As you look at the GPS board, the 12c cable should be going straight in, "shiny" side up, then after folding in on itself, would also go "shiny" side up on the PCB board. If you can, take a good digital pic on that, without the flash.

shiny(pins side) is up, and has been up, I had a CDMA modem in the slot previos, and resued the connector slot(just with the new sled and all the fittings. Same problem as the other thread.

edit: any chance I got a bum unit from heartland and should try sending it back??

There is always that chance. Did you check the fuse on the PCB to make sure it did not blow on you? And to be sure I'm not remembering wrong, flip the ribbon cable over and try it that way.

lowang..As you said its show up in the bios and its enable, right? And then on device manager under port. It is in com3. Try this one under com3 go to properties and then to resources. Change resouces, Ill say the second one from the top then hit ok and changes. let us know then.
