I haven't had any problems with my cf-29 toughbook until a couple months ago when it suddenly stopped turning on. When I push the power switch to turn it on, the power light by the handle & MP light come on and stay solid, but nothing else happens. No beeps, no starting up of the harddrive, nada. It stays inactive with the two lights on until I hold the swith for about 10sec. to turn it off. The battery light shows nothing & originally I thought the battery could be dead, but the lights still come on with the power adapter unplugged. I tested the power adapter & battery with a multimeter and both are good. I've tried turning it on without the battery, only the battery, removing the CD drive and all sorts of combinations with the same result. I can't figure out what could possibly be the problem and have run out of things to try. Any suggestions??

also- would pressing a reset button have any effect & where is it located?

Could your RAM have come loose or gone bad? Can you try removing your RAM and see if it will post (Not the onboard RAM of course, but your add. RAM)

Where is the add. RAM located to remove it? I'm not too familiar with the internal components on this computer..

Were you able to solve the problem? I thought you had to have the system running to do anything w/ Bios

    you have post fail.

could be 2 things that you can pull to fix, otherwise its the board and it must be repaired.

but to start remove all batteries, cd/floppy drives, and hard drives, then try. if it still does not work flip the unit over, there is a little cover held on by 4 screws, remove those 4 and see if you have an extended memory module, if you do, remove it and try to power it on,

if it powers on then replace the mem and try again. mem could just need reseated.

if that doesnt take care of it, take all the screws around the bottom cabinet. 8 screws like the ones you took out of the mem cover. and 8 bigger screws around the bottom. then pop it off, watching for the speaker cable so you dont tear it. you will see a wireless lan module with 2 wires going to it. remove that and try again.

those go bad and can cause no post and power on fail.

I have the EXACT same issues on a CF-29 that I just bought off of ebay. I removed both the RAM and the wireless card and still no post. I poked around on the inside. I checked all wiring, etc and all looks good. When I bought it I was hoping for a quick fix... Burned out fuse, bad inverter, etc... But I think the motherboard is bad.

Is there anything else I can check?

im assuming its a 29E tb?

i know you tried the inverter already.

does the power light and mp light come on but nothing else??

there is an issue with some 29s where something happens on the mb and causes no post, i dont know what causes it or what to look for as far as where on the mb it is.

    sending a pm as well

maybe its possible for u to disconnect the backupbatterie for a minute to reset the bios. the batterie is located on the other side of the board, where the additional ram-connector is.the plug is near of the batterie and can be dis-/connected without dismanteling the board with a small gripper for clockworks.

if the display the problem is, disconnect it: detach the keyboard and the shield under it and u see a black stripe right from a colorfull connector near the hinge. disconnect booth carefully and try to boot. u can use an external monitor if boot is going on.

hope u understand me, i was not so good at english in the school...

for any work inside the laptop be sure to plug off all powersources, also the batterie and u should be grounded (electrical).

It's not even getting to the BIOS... It doesn't pass POST... Yes... I tried removing the backup battery just to check... No luck. From what I hear it is something that went bad on the main board... It could be just about anything. I'll keep tinkering with it and will look for a motherboard on ebay from time to time. The laptop is in perfect shape other than that though... Not a scratch on it. It almost looks like it was broken early in its life and was put aside and then recently rediscovered. I guess I can always use it as a parts unit. But I'd much rather fix it.

an problem of my g4-ibook could be the same:
from one moment to an other the ibook is freezed. if i pushed the body hard near the spacebar, the ibook will boot.
it comes from an self unsoldering graphicprocessor by his own heat. the processor was soldered with balls. i used an airheater-solderingiron smd-rework-station (u know what i mean?) and a little bit of pressure to reball the chip. the ibook works then for 3 months. :) but then nevermore. :(
