My primary machine (mk1, low voltage model, 1.2 ghz, 512 on board) is listed in my sig. I just picked up another 29 in near perfect condition...Mk3, 1.4 ghz 256 on the board. I want to resell 1 of them.

My question is this: The Mk1 1.2 ghz has 512ram on board and will max out at 1.49ram, The Mk3 has 256 and will max out at 1.24. Which one should I keep? Is it better to have a larger processor or more ram?

FYI, if pertinent, Im not gaming but I do deal with allot with audio files and wave editing software (adobe audition).

Harddrive is not a factor because I will just upgrade to 7200rpm.

    Anyone anyone? Help.

Kusa are sure that you have the ram limitations straight. My 29E (mk 2)came with a 256 attached to the MoBo and 256 in a replaceable slot. I was able to get a compatable 1gig ram and up it to 1.2 gig.

Ya, the mk3 (1.4 ghz) has 256 on mobo and I added a 1gb chip to max it out at 1.24 but my mk1 (1.2ghz) has 512 on board and with adding that 1gb chip it max out at 1.49

i dont know what is better: a machine with 1.2ghz processor and 1.49ram or a machine with 1.4ghz processor and only 1.24ram

As far as I know the 1.4ghz has 512 ram onboard and 1.2,1.3ghz has 256 onboard memory.

A very few of the Es have 512 onboard but most have 256. About half of the Hs had 512 while the other half had 256. As far as I can tell, there's no real pattern to the 29 onboard ram beyond almost all of the non-touchscreens (including kusas) had 256.

So again back to my original question: Which should I keep...the faster processor or the higher ram?

Of course the one with a touchscreen, your 1.4 has no touchscreen even if that has a higher proc.....r it comes a time that you need a touchscreen.

Therefore: I say go for the 1.2ghz

Personally I would keep the one with higher RAM. I don't think 200 mhz will make as big a difference as 256mb RAM at those max amounts. The flip-side being if you needed more RAM on the other one, you could increase the virtual stuff since you have a good 7200rpm. I'd like to see what some of the others say though.

Prices on the CF-29's are dropping fast I would resell the older 1.2 while you can still get a decent price for it or sell both and get the 1,6GHZ.

Oh yes! Im keeping touchsceen. ..I use it far too much. I have already swapped the screens and all went well so it just comes down to the issue of faster processor or higer ram

I have been thinking along those lines. Has anyone noticed a significant difference concerning battery life between the 1.2 low voltage and other processors?

Is there a difference in the data/hd bus on these? I understand that when they went from DDR/ATA-6 to DDR2/SATA, there was quite an improvement in performance. Otherwise, all things equal aside from that little difference in RAM vs speed, I'd keep the one I liked the looks of better. I don't believe that any appreciable difference other than bragging rights exists there...

My first thought would be to keep the one that is in the better condition. If parts of one are in better condition I would swap them off and put together a "perfect model"... I would keep the 1.4 with all the good stuff swapped over to it.

EDIT - But you MUST disclose that fact when you sell it if your end result yields a laptop that doesn't match the model number.

Thanks for the advice guys! Im keeping the 1.4 ghz and switching the best parts to it. I will ramp up the 1.2ghz and resell.

Not sure yet. I actually just sold a touchscreen model to an archaeologist down in NM who didnt want a TS. I waiting to hear back from hm to see if he wants to swap touchscreens. I have an interested buyer in NM in which case I would build it up a little and sell for more. The unit is in EXCELLENT condition. The unit came with an intel ab wireless card but I swapped it out and put in the mk3 intel abg wireless card. The battery holds a very good charge and th unit has cd drive, chicklet KB, all port covers and windows xp coa sticker on bottom. I would like to get $550 (without up grades). This way I break even financially. If I do swap out screens so it has TS I would want a little more. If anyone is interested pm me.

I would sell them both and pick up a used CF-30 and max out the memory to 4GB. The updates they did to the CF-30 will make you grin from ear to ear and you should get enough money for both your CF-29s to buy a CF-30 on ebay.

That model no. is exclusively for military purposes an MK3. if you are going to install xp pro., you can download all the driver from pana. site. Here is the link: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pc/cgi-bin/itn/toughbook/dl01.cgi

Look for 29H(MK3) followed by T coz that is a touchscreen model. Install all the drivers and your set to go.
