    Decided to keep this machine.
Wrote the "reconditioner" a nice note about the battery and they sent me a good one gratis.
Been running it hard and it's OK by me.

What is the best way to shut off the WiFi - Pro Wireless 2915ABG?

If it is disabled in "Network Connections" is it still using power?

Is anyone using Control Panel>System Properties>Hardware>Hardware Profiles... to strip down the machine to the basics for game playing or max battery life?

I believe I've seen a wifi shut off program on one of the Panasonic sites. Is there a good one for this particular machine?

    Thanks

    Whoop der it is...

    D/L'd and installed.
    Just the ticket.
    Thanks TC.

Since you mentioned you had 2 of these, uh, maybe you can help me out again.
Do you have the Agere Systems AC'97 modem? And do they work on your machines?
Mine seems to be OK according to the XP diagnostic. Says the thing is working correctly but it doesn't get a dial tone.
I removed the modular RJ-11 jack and cleaned it. Still not good.
Tried 3 different drivers I found various places on line but I'm not sure I installed them correctly. .exe files. Then went to where they located themselves and ran them. Seemed to install but no change. XP refused to find them on it's own.

Looking at the tech manual, looks like the modem is right under the keyboard on the upper right.
Do you know who might sell replacements that would fit there without a fuss?

I'd like to get it fixed, but a USB modem is on my short list JIC.

Yes; and Don't know: never used it. I use either at&t WLAN or WWAN for all connections.

    Try this:

Go to [ start ] --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Phone and Modem Options --> Modems tab --> Double Click on the Agere Systems AC-97 Modem selection --> Modem tab, then look to see if the modem's Speaker Volume is set low or to Off.

    OK tried that. No good.
I guess a definate HW failure.

    USB modem here I come...

BTW I have a thread here in Wireless and Networking documenting my dial up/WiFi doins'.

Anyone take their working Agere modem out of their TB and doesn't know what else to do with it give me a holler. :)

    OK; try this:

Go to [ start ] --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Phone and Modem Options --> Modems tab --> Double Click on the Agere Systems AC-97 Modem selection --> Properties tab, then [ Query Modem ] to check the modem for functionality. Then click the [ View Log ] button for full results.

Did you not post in the wireless thread that you have dial up working now?

I think this tells the tale:

    "Interpreted response: No Carrier"

It appears that the modem is " doin' its thang", but it doesn't have a way to talk.

Have you tried hooking a telephone directly to the line to see if you have a TelCo connection on that particular wire?

    Yeah.
It's the same line I plug into the back of the Toshiba. Even tried a couple different lines jic my jack had a slight mismatch with something. Tried it on a test phone I keep around also.
Only thing left to see is maybe the connection between the modem and the rj-11 is bad somehow. I might get brave and look unless someone can confirm something else.
This modem probably took a beatng considering this was a test machine for a phone co.

The Phone/Ethernet jack board on the CF-29HTM50BM is "field replaceable": just held in by the two screws you see when you open the jack cover.

Have you taken it loose to see if it's even plugged in?
Possibly; but since the testing was done with a Tempo VIP Sidekick 1136-5000 " POTS" tester or ADSL Loop Validator module located in the Media Bay the modem was probably seldom used by the techs.

Yeah. I looked at the jack first thing.
Just now I took the modem out (gaaa the keyboard was really stuck) and wiggled some wires around. Had another look at that jack too.
Everything looks cool. It just don't work.
Thanks for your help and the extra info.
