    hi all

i picked up a CF-29HTM50BM built for SBC off flea-bay this week. I got it in the mail today and installed xppro in the machine and all seemed fine until i tryied the touchpannel. Whats happening is that no matter where i touch the screene the mouse always goes to the lower right corner of the pannel. If i try to set calibrate the touchpanel it will behave normally allowing me to touch the center of the red x's then move to the next red x when i hit enter to lock in the values it says error. Any help would be appreciated

Sorry... You have a bad touchscreen....

    Welcome to the SBC Toughbooks!

Most list them (Even CompUSA and TigerDirect) incorrectly as Non-Touch units.... Knowing that ALL of them originally were equipped with working touchscreens.... They just don't work.... So they bill them as Non-Touch! 95% of them do not have working touchscreens. If you do a search of this on the forum (or Google, which will take you back to thread here...) you will see that certain situations and certain Toughbooks had the wrong adhesive used on the Touchscreens. If/When these Toughbooks are exposed to a high-heat situation... It makes the touchscreen go bad eventually.

This can happen to some CF-18 models, the MK1 CF-19, ALL CF-29s (Though most MK1 models don't have this issue) and the MK1 CF-30.

If it was advertised as having a WORKING touchscreen.... Send it back, communicate with the seller or file a claim. If the seller doesn't want to play ball. File a claim via Paypal or your CC company.

The repair for this will cost you roughly $800 via Heartlandsi.com

any idea as to why the touchpannel will respond when i try to calibrate it as far as knowing that i am touching the red x in the center. any chance I could have dirt in there or somthing causing a pressure point in the lower rt corner, or some kind of software issue? I dont suppose there is anything that I could do by taking the touchpanel appart?

Before you take it apart, cut a small piece of plastic from a large soda bottle (about 1/4 inch wide and a couple of inches long) and carefully slide it under the edge and see if you can clean out anything from around all four sides. Also, if you decide to keep it, you can look for a touch screen (if yours is indeed bad) in a complete LCD on Ebay. You can also buy another CF-29 that does have a working touch (or even take a chance on another SBC as some of us have had good luck with them).

the touch pannel will be nice if i can get it going, but its not necessary. I have a cf28 800mghz and figured i would upgrade. Rick already warned me about them But i figured if i could get one for $100 on flea-bay wich i almost did 107$ it wouldnt be bad. so far the sound wlan video cpu everything else seems ok. I robbed a hitachi 7200rpm drive from my dell so the cf29 boots WAY faster than the cf28. I think it is one of thngs things i will deal with until i can fix or replace the pannel (if needed). i havent given up yet, i just got to go find a soda botel now

It has all the symptoms of a touchscreen going bad. Soon it will not respond at all. You might as well disable it in the BIOS and move one.

From time to time you may be able to find a working touchscreen on ebay. You can transplant this in about 30 minutes or less.

Mine has just started doing this. I find it hard to believe a Toughbook can have such a critical flaw on so many machines (because it tells me they are not tough after all - I have high expectations of them), and that it is not repairable. I'll take mine apart and see if I can fix it.

i know TB told me that somehow the high heat enviorments (like in a crusier) can cause the failures. But my question is more specific in that I am wondering exactly what fails in the pannel to make it track to the lower right, i think soebody said that the layers delaminate?? Moreover if there is a failure of the pannel that forces it to the right why will it seem to calibrate and let you touch the center of the red x with normal results untill you get the error at the end. I am 99.999 % sure that taking the pannel out/off of the screne will do nothing but make a mess. I can only trust the senior experts here and look for a used touchscrene on flea bay. I would like to experiment with the broken one in the future just for giggles.
That being said as far as the cf29 vs the 800mghz cf28 with the 12inch screne i still have :D what a difference in speed and booting ect. i have a battery coming today and still dont think for the $160.00 total investment I did too bad. I think the cf28 will live in the garage so i can watch tv and get onto my alldata account. The ruberized keyboard in the cf28 is a plus when you type with greasey hands
