So here goes. I've had this issue for awhile now and have done extensive research on how to resolve it. To my understanding, the surest way to remedy the problem is to purchase the recovery disks, but to be completely honest with all the financial pressure of late, I cannot afford to make it a priority. The sound went after a fresh install of Windows XP and everything points to it being a driver issue. I had sound before the install. I've tried the drivers from the official website with no positive results... by the way, that is total bullhockey. I've never had official drivers from an official website not work. This is my first toughbook, however, and though I do love my little machine, not having sound is pretty frustrating. Is there any other solution? I cannot send it back to the seller as I've exceeded my warranty and I would really like to resolve the issue myself.
Before people get started, yes, I have searched the forums for an answer applicable to me, and I am really welcoming constructive advice. As always, the possibility for human err is ever present, so please forgive me if I have overlooked the obvious.

It could be the sound is actually working but muted in the BIOS. This situation can be caused by an issue with the hotkeys. Did you install all the Panasonic drivers in the right order? Hotkey functions include F4=Mute, F5/6=Volume Down/Up. Do you see a popup on the display when you press the function keys?
There are folks over at ToughBookTalk.com who may have the right OEM recovery disk for your unit. You might try asking over there if someone could send you a copy.
Another idea is to download a linux disk (e.g. Ubuntu 14.x) and run it from the disk to see if your sound hardware is working. -

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook Forum
Well for starters we need your full model number. Since this is a fresh install did you install all the drivers from the official website...like the 3 Hotkey drivers ? Did you check Device Manager to see if they are any problems ? -

I have tried installing the three hotkey drivers, but the keys still do not work. When I install the sound driver everything acts as though it's working correctly. This seems to be a pretty common problem for the CF-29. I'll also try hitting up the link you gave me in the meantime. Thanks for the quick replies. -
Try this link with several possible outcomes:

Yes, the recovery disk is essential to many Toughbooks, kind of like gas in the tank. -
Thanks, I will try those. The hotkeys aren't working, but somtimes when I press fn+f3 the screen goes black for a second. Nothing else seems to work though.
edit: Well, that didn't work, but one thing has been brought to my attention. After I extract the driver and try to run the hkeyman.exe nothing actually happens.
edit: There are 4 problems in device manager.
MC75
PCI Modem
UGX
Unknown Device
I can't resolve any of these by manually trying to update the driver.Last edited: Feb 8, 2015 -
You need to install ALL of the\drivers..
UGX is bluetooth
modem is the dialup modem
MC75 I think is a WWAN card
unknown device is probably because you did not install ALL 3,,YES THREE hotkey drivers.. -
I've downloaded ALL the drivers and installed them all, but again with the last hotkey driver, nothing happens when I try to launch the .exe after extracting the files.
-
Doyou have all 3 files?
Hotkey Settings Application
Hotkey Driver
Hotkey Appendix Application
Which one does not work?
The files I downloaded from Panasonic are exe files and do not need extracted.
What operating system are you trying to install?
Download from this link and no where else....

Go into D evice Manager , then to Unknown Device, Click update drivers and then Browse my computer for driver software . Go to your C: Util folder and open it . Click only once on folder Drivers . Click Ok then next and this should install the missing driver. Hope I go this right

I have Windows XP SP3 installed. The one that isn't responding is the Hotkey Driver. I know they are all .exe, but I was trying to make it clear that I'm aware that running the .exe extracts the files and then you have to install them afterwards.
Alternatively, I wouldn't mind getting my bluetooth up and running as I have a pretty loud little bluetooth speaker.
Earlier today I tried installing Ubuntu and got the bluetooth working, but the speakers didn't. They worked before I formatted though so I doubt they've blown out. -
[Fn]+[F4] that controls the sound

Okay, so I got hold of the 3 disks, but they're all .iso and I don't have a burner at my disposal. Right now I'm trying to put them on a usb and make it bootable. I found some info on how to do that, but I can't piece it together right. Does anyone has some light to shed on this? Here is the link I've been referring to: http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/143785-recovery-discs-usb.html

I would into a virtual cd drive..Can you do that in DOS?..I wonder what OS the CF29 recovery disks use?
-
I've loaded them on to a virtual drive, but they don't launch like other disks do. My guess is they only boot up on a reboot? I have basically zero knowledge of DOS.

This was tried many years ago and the guy got no where. The recovery disks are not like a windows disk, they are a image of the hard drive when it left the factory. The only way to load it is with a media bay cd-rom or a USB cd-rom. Both will cost you about $30.00
Does the disk say for a CF-29 MK4 ??

Dang, was worth shot. I'll see if I can use a buddy's laptop to burn the discs off. Thanks!
-
I loaned someone these disks awhile back, but never got them back. Hope you have joy soon.
-
Thanks. I tried before to load them on to separate USB drives, but no luck. Someone just suggested trying it though. Is it a futile effort?

The recover disk(s) referenced above are what you need to install your factory image: http://www.heartlandsi.com/whatwedo/panasonic_toughbook.aspx
Or you could just put a Linux distribution on her and be done with it: https://renewablepcs.wordpress.com/about-linux/which-linux-distros-are-the-best/
