new user, i just picked up a a cf-30, CF-30K3PAX2B for a hundred bucks, fully operational with 4gb or ram, and windows 7 32bit
i know its the bare bones unit so i was wondering what is needed to convert it into a touch model,.. do i need anything more than the touch panel and the touch bezel?
-

yep ...
there is an A/D converter that is needed ... it mounts on the back of the lcd .
you also have to use the right touch panel to match the lcd , there is a difference in the polarizations that were used .
the software will be needed .
the easiest way is to get another top unit that has a working touchscreen .
it most likely will be cheaper than piecing one together .SirJ likes this. -

Just thought of this now but can you get into the BIOS ? Press F2 on start up.
FYI...That is one thing we can't talk about "Locked BIOS " We can help you with everything else but that...forum rules. -

Yes sir there was no password , it came with win7 64 bit and I pulled it off and installed Windows 32 bit instead, only 6140 hours on this unit I forgot to mention
Edit: and I also snagged the chicklet backlit keyboard for 15$ as well, love ebay -

 -

Took your advice and found a complete lid from a cf-30 for 49$ I hope mk1/2/3 screens are interchangeable because the listing didn't specify which one it was
 -

They will interchange as complete units.
 -

Awesome! So how did I do? 101 for the cf-30, 15 for backlit keyboard and 49 for touchscreen complete lid?
All in all 165.99
Oh and current battery health is 83.6% so I'll leave that as is and might pick up the media bay battery to elongate the runtime a bittoughasnails likes this. -

You did very good.
I have one too but they only give you about 1 1/2 hours more. I just carry a extra regular battery with me now...3 extra hours on it.Dannemand likes this. -

49 bucks is a fair price for a touch screen/upper unit (complete) .
now ... about a gps ...

The top half you got. Has the Toughbook logo have Toughbook name in black? -

I can't find the thread, but member @ohlip once pointed out that the CF-30 MK1 LCD harness is different from the MK2 and MK3 because of the motherboard connector.
If your newly purchased top half has the connector that doesn't fit your mobo you would need to change the LCD wiring harness to the correct one.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 21, 2016Shawn likes this. -

I just checked all his posting and did not see where he posted it but I could of missed it. I might have a few 30's torn apart in the shop. I will check later. -
I was thinking something like that, but I could not remember for sure.

A Search Ninja indeed !!!

not sure what you guys are reffering to in black but heres the lid i bought, mine looks the same, same logos same antenna bulge
      -

also got another question.. i ran cpu-z to see if everything was gravy and it looks like one ram module is PC2-6400, and the other is PC2-5300, both 2gb, but i dont like running ram at different speeds .. which one is the correct speed for this mk3? or can this unit take a faster module than both of the ones that are currently installed?
 -

toughasnails Toughbook Moderator Moderator
No problem at all...they are both running at 5300 -

This is from a mk1 notice the difference in the logo.
      -

yeah ...
with ram , the speed of the slowest module sets the buss transfer speed .
just to make sure (people have been known to swap out the guts/lids ... mea culpa) ...
good close-ups of the connectors on the ends of the cables is needed . -

so it a mk3 lid then which should in theory plug right into my mk3.. i'll pull the trigger and see what happens.. whats a good diy video for swapping these assemblies?
edit: 20 bucks for a finger print reader complete assembly good? cant seem to find these anywhereLast edited: Feb 23, 2016 -

And that is why I don't use tapatalk anymore...image is fine. -

Alright just did webview photo is there my bad. I do have a mk1 and mk2 sitting in front of me I'll go have a looksie and see what the differences are in the logos
 -

UPDATE: thanks for the help everyone! that ebay panel came in, 20 min swap and everythings fine, had the driver installed from the bundle so all it needed was a calibration
emits a verrrrry faint high pitches noise sometimes, never when plugged in, most likely due to pulse modulation or something.. im assuming thats the invertertoughasnails and SirJ like this. -

My mk1 does that but can only hear it from the back of the screen with my ear to the panel.
Good job on the install
      -

you have exceptional hearing and/or the inverter has a lot of hours on it .
i have seen cases where a loose "bobbin" or cracked ferrite core will cause the problem .
if you have another inverter available , try subbing it in ... as an option you can try pressing on the the core(s) with a toothpick ...
a little judiciously applied "airplane glue" will help fix the problem .
sometimes the noise is due to failing capacitors on the board ... replacement is the fix .
many of the '30s (and such) that are available have a lot of hours on them ... the chances of getting one of these units is getting greater .SirJ likes this. -

might be my ocd.. but its really not that bad.. unfortunate it wasnt listed how many hours were on this lid..
as for the gps unit someone suggested.. are there any benefits of having one vs using a smartphone? i dont think im going to buy a wwan sled and add it to my provider because i get 30~ mb download speeds when i tether my iphone via usb -

Using a $4,000 CF31 to replace a $100 Garmin= PRICELESS.
I would never use a small gps again. -

hmm ill look into it, might not be a bad idea.. but one last question, whats a good car charger you guys would recommend? this will live in the car most of the time as i do a lot of diagnostics work and what not, still have to find a good old software to use with this
 -

yeah ...
drop the coin and get one of the ublox based after market flavors .
i use my '30 and '31 in the plane when we go to related events ...
i downloaded a fair sized data base from google and it works great .
i can actually see the general heading and "zoom in" on any leg of the flight plan and know visually where we are at .
check on ebay for a 12 volt dc charger/adapter .
these run on 110 vac as well .
post the links . -

Research LIND.....output 16.5 5A or better. O.K. 8A.

Be careful, there are a lot of models. -

If the ebay picture doesn't show a yellow tip connector at the laptop end, just keep on looking.
The black tip won't fit.Last edited: Feb 25, 2016 -

Lind is the best for a car only charger.
 -

thank again for your input guys, ill take a look, just got done cloning my hdd to a 250gb samsung 850 evo, i have them in all my macs and had a spare laying around so i figured why not
 -

would a 6 amp be ok? im assuming it would charge faster the higher the amperage?
 -

6 amp is fine as long as the voltage is correct.
15.6 // 16.0 // will be ok. More or less and you will have trouble.
Post a photo of the specs label. -
