Here's a funny one, I have a CF-29 battery Li-ion 11.1V, 7.65Ah and it works in my CF-30 which came with a 10.65V 8.55Ah battery. The CF-30 works fine off of the CF-29 battery but does anyone know if this could cause problems in the CF-30. A difference .45V shouldn't make any difference to me but you never know

    Thanks

    Very strange...

Li-Ion cells are 3.7V due to their chemistry and materials.
Three cells in series give 11.1V

The CF-30 one can't be anything else internally, it must have either a protection diode or an internal switch to account for the lower terminal voltage.

Some Li-Ion packs have a transistor switch controlled through the internal electronics, via the serial interface.

I'd guess it's probably OK as a single battery, but do not use of with the second battery - they could cross-feed if the internal circuits assume a switch and there isn't one...

Unless you don't mind taking chances with the machine, I'd stick to the proper one other than real emergencies.

The CF-30 appears to be using a mixed chemistry of Li-ion and Ni-Mh which may account for the lower voltage. There is a bump or keyway on the Cf-30 battery to prevent it from plugging into a cf-29 but as you noted the CF-29 battery will plug in to the CF-30 just fine. Not sure what kind of problems you may encounter but it is nice to know that in a pinch the CF-29 batteries will work in the 30.

In order to be safe, it must be +/- 5% of its rated voltage. I think you will be safe as long as it has the same pin out.

I would not have personaly attempted to interchange the batterys
I would be real sad to see my $3000 Cf-30 mk-2 go up in smoke just to see if the cf-29 battery would work

In my opnion its kinda a no brainer, most of the panasonic batteries 28, 29 and 30 all sell for found an average of $100 on ebay and such so why bother risking your $2,000 or more computer when you can get the proper battery for around the same as the other ones. If you already have a 29 battery throw that on ebay and use the money you get to get the real 30 battery, there was one on there just the other day new for $99 shipped. Im sure theres a reason panasonic has two different batteries for each model why second guess them, play it safe and do the right thing.

I like the idea of going the other way CF-30 battery on a CF-29 at 8.55ah should boost the run time significantly. Consider the CF-29 yellow tab battery is only 7.65ah and is very hard to find. Anybody want to shave of the key tab on a cf-30 battery and try one on the 29?
