I just tried to replaced my CF-30 hard drive for a larger one. I used Norton Ghost 14.0to copy the drive and then swapped it but when I tried to run Windows XP it stopped downloading files and said there was no hard drive. I restarted the computer and checked the bios which showed the new hard drive but when I tried to run XP Pro again it gave me the same message. What did I do or not do? Can anyone help?

I would try to reimage the hard drive. It sounds like there was some sort of error. Personally... I'd try Acronis Home True Image. You can download the full program and use it free for 15 days. (Long enough for you to reimage your hard drive.) You can run it in automatic mode and reimage your hard drive in less than 20 minutes.

    Just my too scents! ;)

I tried using Acronis and I got the same results as with Ghost 14.0. I must be doing something wrong. What's is the best way when reimaging the hard drive? I read that you have to attach an adapter to the 2.5 and then to the drive you are downloading. Then I was told that you have to redownload the OS on to the new drive. So confusing......need help!

    Jake,
I don't know anything about this except what I read on this site.

From what I've read you will have to have the existing hard drive in your computer, a new hard drive of the proper type, an external hard drive enclosure (mine is a $14.00 USB type), and the software such as the type mentioned in this thread.

From what I understand; one must essentially copy the material from the existing HD to the new. Once that is done, the old HD is removed from the existing HD enclosure and replaced by the new HD.

Like you, I wasn't too sure that I understood all that I knew about that process, so I just replaced the HD with a new one and loaded the recovery discs according to the instructions in the operator's manual.

    Clear as mud eh?

Hi! I wanna know if you follow this procedure:

1.0 Provide a usb adapter for your new harddrive its like an external storage.
2.0 Power up your computer(still with the existing harddrive/old hdd) and install the software, acronis or whatever.
3.0 Restart the computer after the installation of software.
4.0 Now! insert your new harddrive(external) into usb port. Let windows detect the new hardware and install the driver, let it done.
5.0 Then open the acronis(ex. you are using acronis (this is not an adv...t)) go to "manage hardrdrive" then "clone" just follow the instruction and remember when acronis ask you " destroy data on the old harddrive" answer no! and let the clonning continue and finish it.
6.0 After the clonning was done it automatically shutdown the computer and then take out your old hardrive from the caddy install the new one, yes! of crse.. you have to take it off from the the usb adapter. Insert to your toughbook and reboot let it finish some setup and your set to go.

BTW, make sure your old harddrive has no corrupt or damage file from your first try of cloning.

Ohlip, I followed your instructions but I couldn't find the "manage harddrive". Was that in the Acronis Program? When I finished cloning the drive I swapped the drives and all I got was a cursor flashing in the upper left corner of the screen.

Yes. After you install Acronis on your old drive, run the program and you will see "disk utilities"; once you click that, one of the options will be "clone disk". Make sure the new hard drive is connected to your USB via the enclosure spoke of, then click "clone disk". It is pretty much automatic from there. Once it is done, you may remove your old hard drive and swap with the new and should have no problems.

    Hope this helps!!

Thanks, Doobi. Gregg, Just told me that I have to slipstream the SATA drivers with nlite, disable the SATA mode and then download the SATA drivers for Windows XP.

    Jake-

I'm a bit confused here; If you're just trying to exchange a HD that's already working on your machine for a larger one, then you shouldn't NEED to reinstall Windoze after Ghost-ing the new HD - the WHOLE point is to be able to just plop the new drive in place of the old and have ALL your stuff there already. I've done this a couple times with my desktop and clients' laptops using SATA drives with no problem.

mnementh, I am also confused. I tried using Acronis and Norton Ghost 14.0. I copied my hard drive to my 200GB Hitachi and then when I put the new drive in and start running Windows XP it begins to download the files and when it tells me to press enter to download XP, I get an message that there is no hard drive.

    Mmmmhmmm... OK.

Your old drive... it still works in your laptop? If you pop it in, it will fire up and run like it always did?

If so, then you had a bad Ghost session. You need to nuke & pave the new HD, then re-Ghost.

A little Googling on this issue revealed that a LOT of people have had problems running Ghost from Windows using SATA drives; I used a bootable floppy (That Ghost will show you how to make) and did it on my desktop PC.
