    So, I bought and installed a new seagate 500gb / 4gb 32mb cache hybrid ssd hdd.

    It works great and is very fast but there is a constant high pitched whine whenever the computer is idle. If I scroll a webpage or am downloading a file or pretty much anything that is making the computer / hdd work the whine goes away. As soon as I stop actively doing anything the whine returns.

    The whine also carries over to the tv if I out video and audio to a tv via the vga and headphone ports. It is very very annoying. I contacted seagate customer support and they only told me to test the drive with seatools but it comes back fine.

    The 80gb regular hdd that was in the toughbook previously did not have this problem.

    I really want to keep the hybrid drive as it is a nice speed bump in boot times and stuff but the whine is so annoying. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the drive and I should try to exchange it or if I do and the new drive will have the same problem.

    Has anyone experienced anything similar? I have looked extensilvely online and have found some similar problems but nothing the corresponds exactly like mine with the sound also going out over the audio cable to the tv and going away whenever the hard drive is in use.

    Thanks in advance for any help. :confused:

    Sounds like your new drive is generating electronic noise which is being carried through the audio subsystem.

    To validate this, try plugging your patch cord into the headphone jack without plugging it into anything else; this will disconnect the internal speakers from the internal amp. If the whine goes away, then it's as I suggested and you're not going to get rid of the noise without doing some surgery on your laptop's MB.

    Good hunting;

    Tried that, had no effect on the noise, it really just sounds like a high pitch whine coming from the hard drive.

    Sounds like (no pun intended ;)) you have a defective drive.

    Use Seagate's Warranty Support and Returns Assistance and replace the unit.

    Really? And you still have the noise carried over the audio out to an external amp?

    This does sound strange... possible faulty drive, possible compatibility issue (as in this particular drive in this particular model makes an unexpected noise); it happens all the time. Have you got a different laptop you can try it in?

    Would you like some cheese with that whine? ;)

    Ya.... the audio out was a secondary issue, the drive make the noise regardless of if i plug in an audio cable to the laptop and nothing else or not. I looked up the firmware previously and my drive already came with it preloaded, only got it about two weeks ago. Guess I'll try to return in when I get home, just hope the new one doesn't do the same thing as in it is some compatibility problem. Currently on a road trip working so will be a bit =/

    Thanks guys.
