Hey guys, there is alot of useful info on here and some interesting stuff, but i still cant solve my problem.

background, I just ordered a cf-30 mk2 off ebay, it came with wwan, gps, dvdrw and windows xp. after getting it in the mail i installed microsoft streets and trips to use for work, however i cannot find the gps.

i tried using viusual gps, and then going to hyper terminal and checking the ports, still no luck so i went into Bios mode and changed the setting from auto to enable.

After all that i still cannot locate the gps in any port.

somethings i notice, when in hyperterminal it tells me "unable to open port 3"

and when i start it up it says "media test failure check cable"

    Any Ideas??

    Thanks in advance

    Assuming OEM GPS.
    Do a power pull re-set.
    1. Pull all power.
    2. With no power cycle the switch a few times. Nothing should happen. :)
    3. F2 to bios F9 (set to defaults)F10 to save.
    4. F2 again and see if a gps is showing in Serial Ports. You may need to step down and hit enter at Serial Port.
    5. No gps then you have a cable problem.

    Let's start there.

    Jeff....good luck...

You also might want to post your full model number too. But Jeff is right... Check your BIOS.

    Jeff,
yes it is a stock gps
I tried that and i still dont have a gps, and i still get unable to open com port 3. by cable problem do you mean the cable inside that connects it? there is a write up somewhere on installing the sstock gps on non equipped cf-30s soo i could refer to that

i have a cf-30 mk 2 model number cf-30fcs64am if that's correct, i got it off a tag on the back its the top number (of three) with two bar codes in between. i believe its a canadian model as it says Canada 310

thanks guys i really appreciate the quick responses

    Okay.... Here's your puppy...

    Model Number:
    CF-30FCS64AM Status:
    DISCONTINUED MSRP:
    $5,549

Description: WinXP (Vista COA), Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 1.60GHz (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Touch, 80GB, 1GB, Intel 802.11a/b/g, TPM1.2, Bluetooth, Emissive Backlit Keyboard, Dual Pass (Upper:WWAN/Lower:GPS), GPS, Verizon EVDO Rev A, No Drive

Before tearing into this I would try going back into the BIOS and shutting off your WWAN. You may have a port conflict. Either that or you could try assigning the GPS a new COM port instead of selecting "auto" in the BIOS.

If that doesn't work... You should take off the strip above the keyboard, carefully pull up the keyboard and then remove the screws that cover the plate beneath. Your GPS engine and cable are underneath the little silver X. You need to make sure that the cable if firmly seated in both the Mobo and the engine. I've never heard of one coming loose or going bad... But you never know what the prior owner may have done.

    UPDATE, PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
the ebay seller was able to solve my issue, he was very knowledgeable as to what to check (as are you guy's). I'm glad this ebay seller took his time to walk me through it. basically xp wasn't recognizing it. just incase this issue comes up again, here is what he sent me.

    Hi,

If XP is having trouble locating GPS do the following settings in BIOS.

    CF-30 mk2 GPS settings:

Reboot computer and when panasonic logo appears press F2->go to "advanced"->serial and parallel port settings->
    Port A: auto
    B: auto

    GPS: enable -> I/O IRQ: 3E8/IRQ11
    Parallel port : disable

im hoping this isnt what was meant by turn off wwan in bios, as i turned off on other settings.

You were having a port conflict with your parallel port apparently... Port A and B shouldn't matter. The setting you chose for the GPS is COM 3.

The WWAN is your Verizon EVDO...

Glad you got it fixed though...

Now you can go to this site: USGlobalsat Corporate
and scroll down to "top downloads" and click on item "GPSInfo for Windows (ver. 1109151):
Supports (Windows 8/7/Vista/XP)"...this will download a zip program to your downloads...run it...
This will allow you to select com 3, baud 4800, run gps and voila, you should see your unit tracking

I will have to email you a copy of gpsfox when I get a chance. Does about the same thing but the screen isn't cluttered like it is on some programs.
