I'm looking to upgrade my cf-30 mk3 to 8GB and discovering the price jump from 2gb sticks to 4gb is significant...
Anyway, after reading others posts, I am considering this:
http://m.ebay.com/itm/New-8GB-2x4GB...MHz-200pin-Sodimm-Laptop-Memory-/331194740964
Any opinion / advice? Ought to work, right?
Thanks,
Aerik

If you notice they have the memory chip blacked out so you can't see who made the chip. My guess it's made by some no name China company. I would only buy from a name brand company.

Ah... good advice. maybe I'll keep looking. Or maybe I'll just get another 2gb stick and live with 4gb.

4gb and run 32bit OS
-
yep ... what they said ...
what OS (ie : W7 64bit , XP 32bit , etc) do you have in your '30 ?
a 32 bit OS is good for only accessing/handling a bit less that 4 gigs of RAM .
a 64 bit OS on a '30 is not as effective ... as one would hope ... it is actually slower due to the 1.6 GHz processor speed .
the motherboard must be capable of accessing more than 4 gigs of RAM (many years ago it they would access 512 megs at the most !) .
most all programs are written in 32 bit and sometimes 64 bit flavors .
the only really good reason to run a 64 bit OS is in a heavy workload and/or business environment and then one has to make sure that the CPU and program are made for multi-threaded operation .
some programs have less hassle (for sundry reasons) when run in 32 versus 64 bit ... "M$ office" being just one of them (several M$ techs support this) .
save yourself some money ...
i have noticed that the asking price for the "older" ram styles (ie : ddr , and ddr2) has been slowly increasing in price over the last two years .
4 gigs will cost less than 8 gigs .Last edited: Feb 1, 2016Aerik and toughasnails like this. -

I know a few members have upgraded there 30 to 8GB but they never did say if it was faster or not. I know my CF-53 (i5) is no faster. I have 2 hdd/caddies and one I have W7 64bit 16GB and the other I have W7 32bit 4GB . They both boot up in the same time so it's no faster. I think where you really need the extra memory is if you are a gamer...then you would not be on a Toughbook would you.

well, I had a 64 bit win 7 ultimate for the right price, so I went with that and a 2gb stick, so I can use the whole 4gb. Put in a SanDisk ssd, wow, what a difference! boots in like 15 seconds and everything seems snappier! huge difference from my trusty old cf29!
I havent installed any Panasonic drivers yet, want to figure out which ones I actually *need*. I've got two unknown devices in the device manager, but so far everything seems to be working fine... hmmm... -

Multiple tests from different sources have proven that Windows7 64 bit needs a minimum of 6gb to perform as fast as Windows7 32 bit with 3gb.

i can hear richard dawson saying "survey says !" .
there is one driver that i installed on my '30 that really bogged things down .
yeppers ... things were just fine right up to the point i loaded three drivers and then restarted the machine ... then it went to hell in a hand basket .
the machine ran very slow ... i backtracked , uninstalling one driver at a time and testing ... sure enough , it was the first driver i had installed .
i think it had something to do with the hotkeys ... not 100% certain ...
i could look back through my threads when i first joined ... there was a little discourse about it .
oh yeah , those drivers have to be installed in a certain order (not sure if that was mentioned) ...
there should be reference to that in my early threads .Aerik and toughasnails like this. -
Thanks guys. I'm not disputing whether 32 bit runs faster, but I'm pretty happy with this setup so far, and the 64 bit Ultimate really was a good deal... plus for me there's another benefit I haven't mentioned; I'm a programmer and I like the idea of being able to test both 32 bit and 64 bit configurations (in the rare occasion that's applicable) of programs I'm working on. Anyway, it's waaay faster than my 29
I did see some older posts of people putting windows 7 on their CF-30s and figuring out drivers, I'll go read those and see what I can figure out, but in the mean time I looked at the Panasonic website: Looking at individual drivers, I don't see any option to search for Windows 7 64 bit, but in the "Driver Bundles" section there is a choice for 64 bit. And it's a smaller file than the 32 bit. I downloaded them both and still need to go hunt for installation instructions, but does anyone have any wisdom in that area?
(When I put Win 7 [32 bit] on the CF-29, figuring out drivers was a PITA, but I got it eventually... hoping for a smoother experience this time but don't know if I will have issues with 64 bit OS)
Thanks,

I would think the Driver Bundles would have the installation instructions with it but not sure.
-
man , i can't remember ... but i think the sequence instructions are available at the panasonic site .
i printed mine out ... 5 sheets of 12 point font .
no , i do not know where they are at .
if i have time i'll go back and look at my old threads about this . -
Drive bundles auto install in the correct order as long as you install as administrator.
However, if you have a newer non Panasonic driver installed (video is common) it will not overwrite the newer incorrect driver.
You would need to uninstall all of the incorrect drivers then install the driver bundle.
Been there done that. -
man , i wish i had known that when i re-did my '30 !
i screwed with it for over three days !
of course , i did not have a recovery disk .
