First time post. I just got the Toughbook bug and picked up a couple of basically new mk3 cf-30. (Along with a cf-19 and cf-53) I updated windows from 7pro to windows 10 no problem. Now (should have done this first ) I was thinking of changing up the original 160 hdd to 256 ssd.

Changing the drives seems easy enough. Lots of YouTube video. My question is how do I transfer everything (windows 10) to the new ssd? (I have the original 7 recovery disc in case things go south)

I’m in the process of creating a recovery drive using a 64 GB memory stick. Is this all I need to do?

personally, I would use Acronis and create a backup image. Then restore the backup to the new drive.
Acronis can create a bootable usb stick with the Acronis OS on it.

Thanks I will look that one up. I see there is a Corsair cloning kit and Aomei free cloning. Any comments on those?

    Never used them.
They might be a reskinned oem version of Acronis.

    I use Acronis True image.
Newegg has it on sale often.
    Usually for $10-$20.

If you are using a Samsung SSD their migration software works very well, I have used it several times.

The more I read and try and research the best way to go.... ow.... my head
I do have my original Panasonic discs. I suppose I could just reload from the discs then download windows 10 again, which seems to be working great these days on these old babies. I need to take a break from this... my old head hurts from overthinking it

I was going to use Intel ssd5 256gb. Good price yesterday at $30 each I thought about Samsung which were obviously better but at double the price

Looks like Intel has similar free software and will register the SSD at the same time. Thanks for pointing out Samsung cause I never would have thought to check for the same thing at Intel. I will update this post with the results of my first one tomorrow hopefully

I was just looking into oem Acronis last week.
    Intel clone software is Acronis.

Acronis fully supports ssd's. But if you don't trust it then, just rerun the Windows experience index and Windows realigns everything for the ssd. I have used Acronis going to and from ssd'd, dozens of times with not alignment issues.

The is from Acronis's web site.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
The following Acronis products have full support of Solid State Drives (SSD):

    • Acronis True Image 2019, Acronis True Image Subscription
    • Acronis True Image 2018, Acronis True Image Subscription
    • Acronis True Image 2017, Acronis True Image Subscription
    • Acronis Backup 12.5
    • Acronis Backup 12
    • Acronis Backup Cloud
    • Acronis Backup Service
    • Acronis Backup (Acronis Backup & Recovery) 11.7/11.5
    • Acronis Backup & Recovery 11
    • Acronis True Image Home 2011
    • Acronis True Image Home 2012
    • True Image 2013 by Acronis
    • Acronis True Image 2014
    • Acronis True Image 2015, Acronis True Image Unlimited
    • Acronis Disk Director 12
    • Acronis Disk Director 11
    • Acronis Snap Deploy 5
    • Acronis Snap Deploy 4
This means that Acronis products detect whether the drive is a solid state or a mechanical one and will treat it as such.

    Typical examples:

    • If you restore or clone a disk image to an SSD disk, the recovered/cloned primary partitions will be aligned to the default starting offset 1024kb (2048 sectors).
    • If you restore a partition backup to a target empty non-partitioned (unallocated) SSD disk, the target SSD disk will be automatically set to the default 1024kb (2048 sectors).
    • If you restore a partition backup to a target partitioned SSD disk, the default offset on the target disk will stay the same it was before the restore. In most of the cases this is the default offset of an SSD disk (64kb or 1024kb).
A multiple of 64kb (most commonly, 1024kb or 2048 sectors) is the recommended offset for SSD disks.

    More information
All other Acronis products support Solid State Drives (SSD) with limitations:

    • You can perform all the same operations with SSDs as with regular hard disk drives;
    • In older Acronis products there is no technology to detect whether a drive is SSD or not and to set the default (optimal) offset for an SSD. In other words when you restore an image to an SSD drive, it will get the default 63 sectors offset instead of 64kb (or a multiple of 64kb) offset recommended for SSD drives even if this offset was in place when the image had been created. This may result in a drop of performance on certain models of SSD drives after the restore.

Acronis will detect if the target is ssd or not and correctly align the drive.
    See my above post.

Well using the intel (acronis) migration tool was easy. Very smooth. Took 45 minutes using a USB connector

    Funny story,
    I have been working on a CF U1 mk1 with various OS's.
I tried maybe 20 different Linux OS's and finally went back to XP.

    NO sound on XP.
Annoyed and frustrated I reinstalled XP drivers and all of XP several times.
    Still NO sound. ARGH.
Rebooted to Linux to check sound again.
NO sound. OK now I am really FRUSTRATED.
So I opened up the back and reconnected the speaker that I forgot to connect when I modded the USB port.

    I can laugh now.

I’m getting “no audio devices installed “ haven’t had this thing long and never paid attention to whether the sound worked or not. Has something called “soundmax” that doesn’t seem to be doing anything . Not that I need sound right now but

Nothing... can’t seem to find any audio device listed anywhere. Is there a removable sound card on the CD-30? There was only 20 hours on this thing so maybe it was robbed for parts? There were drivers of all kinds

Fixed. High definition audio controller. I had to manually change it

And now I will have to reset the hot key f4 f5 and f6. No big deal

And now the sound hot keys work but don’t display on the screen like all the rest .... omg! lol
