I have an internal HSDPA modem, not sure which model, and it has a gps port in the com settings. My question is this an assisted GPS type port where it works off of the cell service towers or if this can be used as a standalone with out service. I have a cf-30 mk2 in case that matters.

I tried working with the GPS information from a PCMCIA Novatel modem for a project at work. In my observations, it does not work very well (satellite tracking wise) and it stopped working entirely when I placed the card in NDIS mode rather than dial-up mode. I am not sure exactly how it gets its signal, but IIRC, it had to connect the card before it would cough up any data. It was hard to tell if that data was coming through the cell service or satellite as all I had to work with was the Sprint software that came with the card. I could see a GPS port in device manager but I could never get anything usable from it. If I was a betting man, I would say it was coming through cell service.

jcoleman - Could you give us the model number of your unit so we know which type of modem you have fitted?
