CF-30 RAM Upgrade

My 64-bit Mk2 CF-30 has 4GB of RAM installed (2x2GB PC2-6400 800MHz CL6 modules). I read somewhere that 64-bit systems could run with a maximum of 8GB RAM, so I'm thinking of swapping them out with 2x4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 800MHz modules.

I saw some for sale on eBay but they were listed for Toshiba models L350, L505, M300, and S300. Would these work in my CF-30 anyway?

I have a Mk3 CF-30 running smoothly with 8GB of RAM, no issues whatsoever; so it's totally doable and recommended, provided that you can score those modules! (They're not easy to come by.)

That being said, while I've never had any issues with RAM modules on any of my Toughbooks, I did have to debug a strange RAM/OS incompatibility issue on a Lenovo ThinkPad a while ago. The ThinkPad, running Windows 7, would show the dreaded Blue Screen of Death and reboot almost daily after the installation of new and seemingly compatible (DDR3, mind you) RAM modules, 2x4GB. It may have been just an OS thing as I'm using the said modules in an older Lenovo ThinkPad and I've had zero issues with them, but then again I'm using Ubuntu instead of Windows, so there's that.

 

Thanks for the reply. I think I may grab the ones on eBay before they're gone. Sorry I can't help on the BSOD problem you had. Sometimes what starts out as a minor inconvenience can become a real PITA.

 

Older toughbook's were really picky about what they took. I don't think the 30 model is as sentive, but I have had some DDR2 ram that worked fine in other computers but not in a toughbook (CF-19)

Do a search on here (or even the google search of the website) for CF-30 and 8 gb ram upgrade. There are a few that did I think they listed what ram they used.

Well, I tried it with 6gb and 8gb and neither worked. In fact, I couldn't even get the screen to turn on. The hard drive light by the touchpad blinked twice and that was it. So I put the 2x 2gb chips back in. I guess 4gb is the best this model will do. :-(

 

Did you try an external monitor to see what is going on

 

Unfortunately I don't have an external monitor to connect to it.

It sounds like it didn't like that type of ram when it did that.

 

I checked the Crucial website, which also lists 4gb as the largest RAM this CF-30 will accept.
