I ordered a few CF30 one in particular is a mk2. When powering on nothing happens on the display... Should I try a external monitor? What are some tips, tricks or pointers to test hardware?

Yep, they run for a very, very, very long time. That's only 4.9 years straight.

    The GPS module is easy.
    The antenna requires some work.

You should have no problem at all. That's what I have been using for my years.

'Sat on the ground for 20 minutes and it found 7 satellites. Not very accurate tho. Going to see what else is out there."

i took it that you were talking about the hardware ...
i just got done culling out two dead and one waaaayyyy off gps modules .
one was an original sony and two leadtek ...
those *older* modules are noted for the fairly long times before the accuracy is acceptable .
in some cases , the modules spew "gibberish" or just plain refuse to pass anything but "0 data" down the line to the software .
there are several modes of failure in the gps modules .

Is it worth the 70 dollar upgrade for that other GPS antenna kit on eBay? It still uses the upper corner which is nice buts it's less protruding... Hopefully better accuracy? I want something that works right, not something that just works.
Yea the hardware, GPS module, GPS antenna.

in my opinion , based on first hand experience ; yes , it is worth it ... if you do not have an acceptable gps module .
i have looked at several of the *offerings* on ebay and i notice that more than a few used the words "factory" and "original" ...
technology has improved over the years and i do not see where any of the "original" modules would serve to increase the value of the machine .
look at the prices ... some of them are almost as much as one of the units i referenced .
