Having a hell of a time trying to configure my CF-30! I'm thinking it's the SATA interface that's messing things up. Here's how I want stuff configured:
Partition 1: 50MB, DOS 6.22 (yes, I still need DOS)
Partition 2: rest of the HD, Windows XP SP3
I don't have a built-in DVD drive yet (looking for the caddy only, *hint*) so booting off USB DVD drive. Using the Ultimate Boot CD, I get OPCODE errors on everything so I can't use that to partition and install. Eventually got a bootable CD with XOSL boot manager and Ranish Partition Manager. Got the latter to partition the HD, but XOSL doesn't install properly, neither does any other boot manager I've tried?!! Can someone help?
Also the problem is that the OEM restore disc doesn't have a real Windows install, just a raw restore, so that messes things up too since I can't use that to restore a partition!?

Wow...
The sata is most likely the problem
I have not been able to put w98 on the newer computers either

You need to be able to disable AHCI and turn it into normal IDE for the SATA operation mode which you cannot do on a CF-30 as the BIOS won't let you.
Sorry you are SOL. -
Hmmmm... I was thinking about a dual steam/nitro setup for my Porsche too.....

Hmm. Well that royally sucks and blows. My CF-29 just has a 50MB partition to run some old school radio programming software. I don't want to keep another laptop just for doing that!
Maybe a bootable USB stick will work... ? -
The software will not run from the C prompt in xp ?
Maybe newer programing software is available

What about a virtual machine?
-
Nope. Anyone familiar here with Motorola will know!
The software rely on hardware clocks and direct addressing, so no VMs, no XP command prompts, must be pure DOS or I may end up with a paperweight. There are no alternatives, unfortunately. The software is even picky on UART chips - the physical presence of serial port means nothing! It didn't work on old Samsung, but works on a Thinkpad and Toughbooks. -
Whew - it's been a while since I flashed a MoldyRolla... I used an old 380XD when I did it. Are you sure the RS-232 on that is gonna have the right clock speed for your application? It may not even be UART driven - could be a Multi-I/O chip that also drives FireWire & USB... They can be a real pain for DOS.
Also, remember that DOS can be a total pain in the arse when you're trying to use more than 512MB of RAM; we have machines now with more RAM than you could get HDD Space when DOS was written... It's design allows for only 2 GB of addressable locations TOTAL, between RAM AND STORAGE.

Not NOW, I have a tail-ache!!! -
And there is no option for a legacy-mode in the BIOS?
Had u tried an Windows ME Installation CD?
Hm, so check this out:

Solved it.. sort of. Bootable USB thumbdrive. Had a 256MB Lexar one and it's pretty much useless for anything now, so.
Downloaded HP SP27213 aka HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool. The current HP Drive Key Boot Utility only boots to Linux and its built-in drivers froze during load on my CF-30. Load ISO image of DOS 6.22 to a virtual drive using MagicDisc. Ran the Tool and told it to make the USB key bootable and to use the files from the virtual drive... voila!
