Hi, newbie to CF-30's, just got this one off e-bay and it seems to be loaded.

This CF-30FCSQXAM has 2 connections for external Antennas near the Port Rep. Connector. What are they used for? I also see a utility available for Antenna Switch, how do you know if you need it?

I see I have a slot to install a WWAN Sled and I'd like to add a GOBI unit. What's a a good low cost option for a GOBI unit (model number to search for) for USA GSM, I'm planning to use it for data when Wifi is not available.

So far all the goodies seem to work after getting a recovery disk for it, Wifi, GPS, BT, but I haven't gotten to the fingerprint reader yet. Battery looks good for 4 hours, I think I scored on this one.

    Thanks in advance.

Unscrew the cover above the battery and install a sled with a Gobi card attached....with the dip switches set to your carrier.

It's all up there /\ with a little reading and https://www.google.com/search?btnG=1&pws=0&q=TEST+site:forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic . Replace TEST with your question. Like "dip switch GSM". Save it to your tool bar it will speed things up a lot.

There are others better at Gobi installation than I.

Somewhere up there Rob said that you must always do a "battery pull reset" after changing/ adding cards. (replace TEST with battery pull reset) /\

Maybe Shawn knows where to find a sled and a gobi card.

One of the rear pass-through antennas is for WWAN..the other could be WLAN. I'd have to see the bottom of the mobo to tell you. To add ram....and it will take 8 GB (see Azrial's thread) you have to lift the smartcard reader out of the way to access the bottom stick. the two 40 pin cables are easily damaged. Smartcard readers are out of fashion but it does plug the hole.

    Welcome.

    Shawn,

The unit you will get has a sled in case you can not find one elsewhere. I'll check the card tomorrow.

    Update,
Another post pointed me to a configurator that answered the Ext. Antenna connection question:

Description: WinXP (Vista COA), Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 1.60GHz (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Touch, 80GB, 1GB, Intel 802.11a/b/g, TPM1.2, Bluetooth, Emissive Backlit keys, Smartcard, GPS, Dual Pass (Upper:GPS/Lower:WLAN), Fingerprint, Wireless Ready, No Drive

I'm assuming that means I don't have an Antenna Switch, I'm still not clear what the Antenna Switch utility is for?

Will GOBI 2000 work in my MK2 if I already have the internal GPS or does the GOBI GPS stay inactive via DIP SW?

on a cf30 the gps are separate and can be installed in the same unit at the same time.

So I understand I need a SLED and a WWAN card (still not sure how I determine the P/N's I need).

Can I get low cost 3G functionality without the GOBI card if I am only using a GSM carrier like ATT (i'm asking about hardware costs only not the service.) ?

I have a cf 30 sled and a GOBI 1000 from a cf52. The GOBI 1000 will go right on this sled.
Since my card came from a Toughbook there should not be any whitelist issues. The 1000 is much more economical compared to the 2000. Not to mention finding a GOBI 2000 from a Toughbook is somewhat difficult. Alot of the ones listed on fleabay as coming from a Toughbook are fake.
I'll dig this stuff out of the storage bins and work up some sort of price for you....
