CF-30 keyboard won't type certain numbers or letters. Anyone else have this problem? It did it when I first got it but a software update took care of the problem. It's back again. Could it be a bad keyboard?

Welcome to the Panasonic Toughbook forum

By any chance is your number key lock on? It might be a bad keyboard but you could also try reseating the keyboard ribbon too.

What numbers / letters don't work?
This sure seems odd to me..Especially that a driver cured it before..

    Model Number : CF-30FTSAZAM
    Status : DISCONTINUED
    MSRP : $4,249

Description: WinXP (Vista COA), Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 1.60GHz (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Touch, 80GB, 1GB, Intel 802.11a/b/g, TPM1.2, Bluetooth, No Drive

You could do a system restore back a few weeks ago and see what happens. I don't think it's a driver problem. As Shawn said...which keys are we talking about.

Never heard of driver fixing it.....though a Linux live cd could be used to test.

Take the keyboard off clean the connections with a pencil eraser...lengthwise with the traces so one does not come unglued. Inspect the cable from the Keyboard PCB to the motherboard.
Either before or after the above do a power pull reset and set bios to defaults. Boot twice.
It sounds like the numlock key from your initial description....as stated above. That would be 789uiojkl keys btw.

I do remember having one KB that did as you described. It's in the bin.

    Good luck to you.

If they are random outages... It may be a connector issue you can clean up with a pencil eraser... If it is a block of numbers/letters... In my experience you will need a new keyboard. But this was with illuminated silicone keyboards. I have never had an emissive keyboard go bad strangely enough...

I have always had problems with my "N" key. Sometimes they get dirty or worst, the switch will get damaged.

You are experiencing this fault because you have bad connectivity on Track 8 of the 13 line FPC cable (key registry circuit layer) leaving you with 2 possibility.

    1. Broken track on keyboard. Please check if your Pause Break or Page Down key works as this is in the same track line?
    2. Poor contact with main board connector on line 8 of 13 FPC cable.

    Solutions
    1. Trim 2mm off the 13 line FPC cable end where it connects to the main board as this may have been worn out. ** Make sure you trim evenly so this can align correctly on the main board connector.
    2. Replace keyboard.

Trace track 8 from the 13line FPC and see if you can spot a break on the line. If there's any damages, there's nothing really much you can do to fix this.
