On the way back from a jobsite yesterday I hit a pothole in my truck that couldn't be avoided. My cf-30 shut down instantly. I recently recalibrated battery and ran a few malware and virus checks and came up with nothing. In the past it has shut down for no reason a handful of times. I have no idea what it could be and am looking for help. would not restart or show that it had power with battery installed. I pulled battery and hdd then held power button for bout a minute. Put hdd back in and plugged in power supply. Turned on and after booting back up installed battery. Working fine now, but just don't understand what happened. What can I do to diagnose and or prevent further problems?

Toughbook CF-30 Tarmac (or even Indoor) Edition
)
I presume there is a bad contact between laptop and it's battery. Or there was a bad contact in your 12V socket and ac adapter couldn't live with that problem.
I've had problems on CF-18/19 HDD's on bad roads, but it's not "one hole" problem, it's where hole means there is a road at all)) SSD is a must in toughbooks.

Just to be safe, I would pull the base off and re do the thermal pads on the cpu. Pads NOT paste..

Possibly the power port connector on the motherboard is failing.
-
Sorry to ask but:
Powered up on battery only?
What Shawn said ....take a few minutes and check the thermal pads. (squish to make thicker)
Then tighten screws on battery connector area.
Is this a CF-30 battery? With the ridge on the side? They didn't put that there fore fun.
I believe poor battery connection but am hedging my bet due to earlier shut-downs. -
I'm thinking possibly two separate problems. Fixing the thermal pads is just good maintenance.
I need to know if it was plugged in or running on battery alone.
I have seen more than one Toughbook shut down randomly with a bad power port. First time one did it, it drove me nuts until I found the problem. -
It was plugged in.

With the laptop running and plugged in...without the battery in.....wiggle the power plug on the laptop...
-
Nothing happened Shawn

Probably an internal battery connector then.
Do you feel tech savvy enough to pull the base and take a peek? -
If you have a regular rotational hard drive and NOT an SSD... Then it probably just scrammed. The shock casing (caddy) is great but doesn't protect the hard drive platter from smacking into the actuator arm and head on a bad bump.
Get an SSD... -
What about the previous shutdowns?Toughbook likes this. -
How do I read the temps with cpuz?

Battery connection maybe? -

Kerry...I am running 64bit cpuz and found nothing that tells me the temps. Am I blind or am I missing something here ? -
batterycare tells me the temps...sometimes......when it wants to....never explored why.

Core temp is the name of the program,geez....loosing my mind.
