Well, finally decided to get Win 7 installed on the CF-30 MK1

It was running Vista, which was ok, but decided it was time to try Win 7. Also got a great deal on a 240gb Sata 3 SSD and installed that too.

Everything went flawlessly. Had a very minor issue with the sound, but got that working pretty quick.

So far, I like it, but I don't know if I will keep the SSD in it. I mainly use the CF-30 for auto work such as tuning and diagnostics. I may trade the SSD out for the 7200rpm drive in my daily use laptop.

With the price of SSD's dropping if you can afford it I would buy another SSD for your daily one or if you don't need a 240GB in your 30 pick up a smaller one like a 120GB . That is what I have in mine.

Was looking on Amazon for a slower, cheaper 120gb drive, but the cheapest I could find was 44 bucks.

I tried the SSD in my daily driver before putting it in the CF-30. It had win10 on it and it was pretty quick.

Will be ordering a 120gb in the next few days.

After the clean install, I created an image on a spare usb tarabyte drive and repair disc. If I get a new drive installed, that image and repair disc is all I need correct to get it running as it sits correct?

I ask because I normally just do a fresh install of windows and then reinstall software and yada yada....

Yes that should work fine. Most of the time I do a full install too but if everything is running right then the backup should be fine.

yeppers ... a SSD is a good thing to have in a mobile comp ...
i have replaced many spinny drives in laptops that went south while being used .
even the shock mounted drives in the panasonic machines can still suffer from mechanical failure .
a ssd circumvents this little PITA nicely .
it is one more step towards increasing the ruggedness and reliability factors .
