I have just bought a CF-30 that has a cracked display (the price was right). It just seems to be the front glass, as the displayed image is OK. It is not a TS and is the 500 nit model.

Can I convert this to a 1000 nit TS? If so, how and what parts do I need?

Alternatively, is the front glass replaceable?

    Thanks for the help.

I haven't had one apart yet, but soon will. If it layered like other seen you "might" be able too. I have a touch model with inverter/bulb problems and a screen with lines in it and I am swapping the bulbs and inverters out.

Bob, the front glass is replaceable... You just need the patience and tools, tape, etc to do it.

I think you should be able to swap a touchscreen in... You'd need to swap just the screen... Not the connector and the screen, depending on model...

Someone chime in if I am wrong.

You need the Touchscreen circuit board and cable that goes to it also. I have the top half of a touchscreen model cf30. It had a bad lcd, but I have the rest. I just checked it to refresh my memory. The clear glass or touchscreen is taped to the bezel. Strong tape.
The easiest way to swap in a Touchscreen is to purchase a whole lid assembly from a touchscreen model.

Thanks -- I was wondering if there is a board I need to add and whether or not the BIOS is different.
Apparently I do need the touchscreen board and cable.
Shawn, do you want to sell your "top half"? If so, how much do you want for it?
Where can I get a touchscreen board and cable? I haven't seen them on eBay, but I shall look again.
The whole lid assembly is an option, if not TOO costly. Anybody got one to spare?

Thanks for helping out this newbie.

The BIOS in the CF-30 will auto-detect the touchscreen once you have it installed. You can certainly swap lids between like models but I think there are differences between the MK1 and MK2/3 models. (where they plug into the Mobo... the plug on the LCD is the same.) So swapping the LCD and Tscreen board might be your best all around bet.

I just replaced a touchscreen in a CF-30 using an older CF-29 unit. (They are the same) I carefully used and exacto knife to cut the bond of the tape... Some goo-b-gone to get rid of the residue.... Alcohol for cleanup... Then carefully trimmed the edges in industrial 3M double stick tape. It worked like a charm... And all I needed to do was to carefully plug in the plug into the back of the LCD.

    Give it a shot!

I shall give it a shot. It sounds very do-able.
I discovered that the Intel matrix driver caused nothing but problems (Windows Update wouldn't run) so I removed it. Everything is working very well now under Win 7.

I have no idea what is wrong with my settings on this board. I can't reply to any PMs -- my reply fields are "grayed-out".

How about an update on the screen transplant? Is the heart beating or is it DOA?

I am still waiting on parts (and money  ) to finish the job. But the computer is working well. I installed a 1 TB HDD and Windows 7 Pro. (had those on hand) -- used all the drivers from the CF-30 Mk 3 except for the video driver which was the Vista driver for the Mk 2 installed in compatibility mode. Just now copying a lot of files and installing programs (or do we have to call them "apps" now?) and putting up with a cracked front glass for the time being.

If it makes you feel better, neither have we. toughasnails already notified the rest of us and the lead moderator will delve deeper into it, he's got access to settings we don't. Sorry it's taking so long by the way.

Hello, I see you are waiting on parts for your cf-30. I just started a project to transplant the touchscreen from a cf-29 to my cf-30 non ts model. It wasn't too bad to install all the parts, but now I can't seem to get a driver to work. Keep getting "the installation is not complete" or "this machine does not support". Sorry to jump in your topic, I can start another if you want. My model CF--30C2P34BM. I am thinking I can't put a TS in a non TS model, even thought the cable connection are there. I do get a unknown device under Universal serial bus controllers. Have tried to manually force the driver install, but no go.

    Thanks

update Windows 7 pro, bios V1.01L20/V1.10L11

I am not the one to give advice here as I am just trying this myself.
I suspect that your problem is that unknown device. Try re-installing the touchpad driver and then the touchscreen driver using compatibility mode if needed.

Hopefully someone here who has more experience will chime in.

Thanks, have tried reflashing bios, reinstalling touchpad driver. no luck, just get installation did not complete when trying to install the touchscreen driver. If I unplug the cable to the touchscreen board, the unknown device goes away, so that is the touchscreen. Will try some more tomorrow.

So if it helps, I think the problem I am running into is that the CF-29 touchscreen board is different than the CF-30 board. My CF-30 detects the CF-29 board as a unknown device, but no drivers are working. I believe the actual touch screen glass is the same between the models, but the board is different. Just thought I would let you know in case you are trying to take the CF-29 parts and put them in a CF-30 like me. I am still very new to working on the Toughbooks so I could be very wrong. Oh and I have tried windows 7 and Ubuntu.

    Good luck,

Yes! Its different, the CF-30 ts system uses USB while on CF-29 is a serial. Of course they are both serial but different function. Just for fun or maybe trial and error, try the ts driver for CF-29. How it goes. You know the drill on installing the driver on CF-29? Its from device manager not just like an executive prog.....

I just received my screen etc. from Shawn (Thanks Shawn!) and installed them in my Mk 2. All went easily and the TS shows up in Bios. Now I just wait for a new HD caddy to arrive so that I can install the HD and check out function under Windows 7.

Regarding the inability to reply to PMs, it is the same on a different computer.

I ditched IE years ago, windows 95 years. If you hate advertisements go look up and add "adblock plus" and "flashblock"

The main reason I swapped. On the rig on the office pc with IE it takes a while to bring up even one page, with firefox portable I can do about 3 pages at once with the same bandwidth. The adblockers really help out.

I am looking to messing around with palemoon some, it's suppose to be firefox, just better optimized for windows. Haven't really tried it yet, most of firefox's addon work with it.

I have been a bit remiss in updating my progress here -- sorry 'bout that.

Thanks to Shawn selling me the parts I needed at a very fair price the transplant is done and everything is working properly. Touchscreen works just like it was meant to and it calibrated easily.

Thanks to everyone here who helped. Now I move on to my next project -- replacing a motherboard on a CF-30 Mk3 just as soon as it (the "new" MB, that is) arrives on Monday.
