First time poster here, and new to Toughbooks. I just bought a CF-30FCSACAM with W7 Pro, which I believed to be a touchscreen (judging by sixth digit "C"). In fact the BIOS show it to be a touchscreen, and there appear to be touchscreen items in the Control Panel. But the touchscreen is not working, and the seller says that the unit is not a touchscreen.

Is it indeed a touchscreen? And if so, how would I go about figuring out why the touchscreen is not working? I read several threads about downloading drivers, but the links seem to be old.

    Thanks in advance.

    DISCONTINUED

    $5,199
Description: WinXP (Vista COA), Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 1.60GHz (Centrino), 13.3" XGA Touch, 80GB, 1GB, Intel 802.11a/b/g, TPM1.2, Bluetooth, AT&T Cingular HSDPA, Dual Pass (Upper:WWAN/Lower:WLAN), Emissive Backlit Keyboard, No Drive

If you have a linux live disc, run it and see if the screen works, also boot and hit F2 and tell me how many hours it shows in the bios. The seller is clueless, obviously. And when you are in the bios tell me the bios version.

Just wanted to see the hours,I'm going to guess maybe drivers but win 7 usually makes it work. That's why the Linux disc,if it works in Linux it will work in Windows. The Mk1 was famous for a bad touchscreen but the Mk2 is pretty good.

I dont remember if it should be in tablet mode or not. But I don't think so.

I'm not familiar with Linux live discs, I did find some ISO download options, but not sure which one to choose http://livecdlist.com/. Can you suggest one?

OK, I installed Cinnamon on the toughbook. How can I check the touchscreen (sorry, I'm a Linux noob)?

This happens a lot on ebay. The seller will sell it as a non touchscreen because the touch is not working. It just might be a driver problem too.

Assuming I'm in the right area in Linux, I got to Mouse and Touchpad, which has "Enable touchpad" checked - but I am not able to get any touchscreen action. Does that mean it's a hardware problem?

What would be the best place to start looking for a problem with the hardware? Can I try to swap the touchscreen from another CF30 I have, that does have a functioning touchscreen?

do you have a complete top unit ?
it would be easier to swap out the whole top .
those touch screens are thin and frail when it comes to removing them ... they are sort of stuck in place .
there is also a polarization compatibility issue .
what model and mark is the machine you are working on and the one you could pull the top unit from ?

Found it! Believe it or not, the ribbon cable was not plugged into the touchscreen board, it was just taped to the top of it! Plugged it in, works like a charm. If only everything in life was this simple :).

    taped-to-the-top ... unbelievable .
    some people ...

many years ago , when outdoor tv antennas were used extensively , i went on a service call to the home of a customer who had just picked up their set that i had repaired .
the complaint was that there was "snow" and no picture or sound .
the set was one of those big pieces of furniture that you could bury your mother-in-law in .
i pulled it away from the wall with help from the owner .
i had my 1/4 inch spin-tight in hand and started to remove the back and then i seen the problem ...
there was a lamp and clock cord that was holding the antenna lead (that had ripped loose from the terminals) about a half inch from the screws .
i told the guy and pointed to the problem , then i stripped the leads and put them under the screws ...
the set produced a beautiful snow-free picture .
we pushed the set back into place , he turned to me and said :
"so , how is it that the signal can travel about 20 miles from the tv station but it can't make the last half inch ?"

So how come my mk2 has an older bios to this one ?

    Mines V2.00L14 and V2.00L11

Is it worth finding the newer bios and what did it improve ?

It's a non-touch...note the F3. That's the difference in bios. It can be made a touchscreen....and work with the existing bios I think. The screen will not be 1,000 nit.
I need to see a picture of inside of lid.

BTW on pictures above the little piece of Kapton tape shown belongs on the FPC it sorta steadies it and keeps it from backing out of the TSPCB.
