    Howdy, experts!

I'm getting ready to do a W7 Pro install on a CF-30KTPAXAM; a complete clean install on a second hard drive.

The plan is to play with W7 and learn it on the one drive, but use the other drive with the XP and all my work stuff on it until I'm all tested out and ready to transition to W7.

Anyway, is the 64 bit version of W7 'safe' to use on this laptop driver-wise, or am I going to have troubles with driver updates for the hardware?

Thanks for any advice you can give!

At this point, Panasonic has NO support for Win7/64-bit on the Toughbook product line; there are chipset limitations which interfere with some features of the 64-bit OS. (Mostly maximum RAM and some stuff with video) We don't know FOR SURE if it will or will not run with all features; it simply is not supported, so it would be an experiment.

There is good probability that you should be able to get it all going with 32-bit drivers in compatibility mode; so if you're feeling froggy - Jump! Then post here with your results.

How much RAM do you have in your CF-30? If it is less then 4GB, x64 seems a lot of hassle for very little return.

I have 4.0 gB in the unit.

It seems from the remarks so far that installing the 64 bit version is not a good idea. Some indicate that there are even issues to overcome with the 32 bit version.

I notice from your tag line that you are running W7.....should I expect issues with a 32 bit fresh installation?

I am not saying that x64 is a bad idea, I am saying that I don't see much benefit from it on the CF-30 with only 4GB of RAM. I could be wrong.

I have an older CF-29 with W7. So far eveything is running smoothly and I have more problems with software not being updated to Win7 then hardware issues.

As to your question, I always expect "issues" when upgrading to a new OS, specially on a laptop, which are by nature very proprietary. But with that said, I would be very surprised if they can not be all overcome

Correct, it is not a good idea

Most of the new laptops that I work on now have 64 bit standard , and application loading ,especially older software is problematic

Thanks, all, for the trouble to respond.

Off I go to pick up W7, install 32 bit on the 'spare' drive, and begin the experimentation with the various software I need to serve my clients.

    Thanks for the help!
