So I haves this new (to me) CF-31 and I am getting ready to upgrade the RAM from 8GB to something more, I am thinking 16GB. I plan to dual boot again, and I was planning using Ubuntu 14.04 x64. But some of the other distros looks tempting so perhaps...

So which version of Windows do I use? Win 7, Win 8.1 or Win 10? I want speed, but I know what older versions of M$ Office will not run on Win 8, or greater, or have they fixed that? Office 365 is damned subscription ware and I will have no part of that scam! So which will be faster and more stable on the CF-31.

And yes, I know that I need to run an x64 bit version to take advantage of my RAM. So, other then that, let's hear some opinions! :D

I am still running 7 on all of my machines, but playing with 8 in the past I have been able to get 8 to run a little faster. I think on one higher spec pc we got shut down time to under 10 seconds. With 8 you would just have to mod the user interface to get it more like 7 if you like that.

Right now for me it's still too early on 10, and with all the friendly spying in the back ground I just can't recommend it.

Azrial, why don't you use Libreoffice/Openoffice instead of MSO?
    I'm on CF-19 MK5 16GB now. Win 10, no problems.

yep ... office 365 will only run on W7 and above .
i believe that one can still buy a copy of (what amounts to) non-subcription M$O .

i use both libreoffice and M$O ... i really do not have any choice but to do that .
to cover all the bases , i need to switch back and forth .
there are some M$O files that LO will not open (and vice versa) at all or opens but turns everything into a pile 'o crapola .

i like laying up certain things in LO as opposed to M$O .
most of the business world runs on M$O .

most of this asides , the M$O 32 bit flavor is the wiser choice for installation .

I use LibreOffice right not, but I do not like it as much as I did Office 2003, I could do almost anything in that utility. I have no idea why those idiots at M$ think that people want to totally relearn software every few years!

Thanks, the spying gives me pause as well, but it seems that most of it can be disabled and I like the extra speed. My machine is going to dual-boot, like my CF-30, and my new credo is "Never let Microsoft touch the Internet, unless it has to." I use Linux for email and browsing.

    Thanks for you valued input!

    You are well Sir!

I have put this on my reading list, for when I get back to work! ;)
The truth is I can not make LibreOffice do everything I can MSO 2003. I have and do not like MSO 2010 & above. I will not run any subscription software, ever!

i have given some thought to the "state of affairs" of W10 ...
it seems to me that they are moving forward with the push and tweaking of W10 even though it is getting panned by a large number of people/trial users .
methinks they are confident that *their* software will have to be accepted/used my the masses .
it appears that they believe that they think they are the only game in town and thusly , W10 will be rammed down the throats of a vast majority of users .
how long will it be before the government intercedes ?
yeah ... if ever or not near soon enough .

Mainstream uses Windows.......Not Linux or others......

So they can get away with a lot of things just because they are "The OS company" Another point is that to the people that do not understand how things work like many geeks do, think them being able to shut off "bad" programs" is a good thing.

I guess what I am saying is that to the masses and the uninformed, they probably have the appearance that they are trying to protect the user.......

I'm sure there will be a time when Win 7 and Win 8 are no longer supported as well.....

Not to get off topic.... I voted on the poll. I like my win 7 OS.

Maybe enough will complain about W10 and they will come out with another good one after it.....Kind of like Vista followed by 7.

USA and Canada are very slow at this stuff but overseas like China...my guess they will be the first.

That is the BIG problem and even many geeks are having a problem keeping them "Shut off". My understanding is every time it updates you have to go in and shut it all off again

I actually tried to do the update on my desktop,I figured why not as I have the factory restore discs. After about 10 days it still has not managed to download and if I clicked on the link to see download progress,it crashed every time.

So I shut it down and removed the update for the icon,Win 7 it is. :D

    I ran 8.1 on a Lenovo X201 core i7 with a 128ssd,boot time of 9 seconds.
