I know there has been threads in the past regarding this but nothing too recent.
Is this GPS compatible with a mk4? Am I wasting money on outdated tech? Is there a more preferred unit that is more reasonably priced?

Well the prices are not to bad. I would go with the first link even tho the second link is the same seller but he chargers more to cover his cost selling on eBay. If you need the antenna's then go with the third link. That's the best I can tell you.

Yuo don't need to go further. The U-blox M8N is the one that can detect USA, Russian and Jap satellite that other fellas are talking about. As a matter of fact. This is the module I installed but custom setup(not OEM pc board) with active antenna from time to time as per customer request.
