I have a P4M 1.6 CF-48. Is the CPU fan supposed to run all the time? I suspect I have an overheating problem ... I opened her up and the CPU fan is not running at all, although the fan at the back of the case cycles occassionaly.
    Thanks!

hi, the p4's 2 fans run often and they run independent of each other. the cpu fan under the keyboard is the quiet one, and the one you hear is the case fan which depending on model may vary in speed making it more or less noisy. if in doubt of cpu fan operation, pull up keyboard and leave it wired to system and start a virus scan to work the processor and see if fan runs. only take this advise if you are comfortable with diagnostics of a laptop- in other words "you are responsible for your actions" good luck

    Thanks for the advice, 48User.
I've determined the fan does run on occasion. I also pulled off the heatsink on the CPU and discovered the thermal paste was pretty hard and ugly. A cleaning and repasting has been done, so we'll see if that helps the heat problem.

    (...groaning noises)
She ran fine for a while, but now sometimes neither fan comes on and then, of course, she overheats and locks up. Re-booting after a wee rest she'll work again just fine with one fan or the other, and sometimes both fans running. Then we go through the whole schamozzle again
I love this machine and am not ready to give up on it!
Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

Operating Laptops also generates very high amount of heat, though all the laptops are also well equipped with a proper cooling system. Overheating can cause severe damage to the laptop and some time even stop functioning completely. Hence all the Laptops are attached with laptop coolers which do the same function as the CPU cooling fan.

Wow, I'd have never guessed that - SEEING AS THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT.

Please, don't use a pointless response with no value whatsoever as an excuse to forum-dive into our discussions with a blatant advertisement; if that's all you're good for, we can do without your input FOREVER.
