I'm new to the Toughbook and new to laptops as well. Use a CF-30 at work and wanted a more 'normal' laptop, so got a CF-51, two of them, actually. I'm very pleased with it, but have a concern.
#1 - CF-51 MK2, 2.0Ghz (NOT Core Duo).
Using Everest and SpeedFan 4.45 both, I see CPU temp at 63C (145F) when the fan comes on. Temp goes down to 57C (133F) and fan stops. This is with system idling, running only Everest and SpeedFan. Watching video online sees temp climb faster and cool down slower, but numbers are the same.
#2 - CF-51 MK3, 2.0Ghz Core Duo. While typing this post, CPU temp runs at 40C (104F) and fan runs constantly.
Using Panasonic AC adapter in both cases.
Do I have a problem?
Thanks for your help!

I would blow out the fan good, pull the cover and see how good the thermal pad or paste is on your CF-51. I had a factory Pentium M 1.73 upgraded to a Pentium M 2.0 and never seen that problem. Only thing you have that is different is x300 ATI graphics and mine had integrated graphics.

if you check the specs on the single core cpu on the mk1 cf-51 I would bet it may run hotter than the core duo cpu model being it's doing all the work on a single core and probably has a thicker core and just naturally will run a little hotter. plus the fan may be routed flow wise a little different and cool a little better. but as ADOR states blow out the area around fan and check the thermal dissipation pad to see if it needs replacing or re"smooshing" and put back in. some use the AS-5 ceramic paste and some do not and say it helps keep cpu temps cooler. some of the more experienced gurus have said the AS-5 paste is not necessary and actually may even interfere with heat removal to the heat sink. I've done it both ways and can't be sure it matters other than on old cpu's it seemed like a paste was used and it "stuck" to the shiny part of the cpu die. got too hot? I have noticed when upgrading the C2Duo cpu on mk3's the fan did run more with the T7600 cpu or at least was noisier to me. Temps varied but never got excessively hot. anyway, for what this info is worth...Driller

I would say too that your 51 needs a good cleaning. Blow out the fan and pull the CPU heat sink off and use some "Artic Silver 5" Arctic Silver 5 AS5-3.5G Thermal Paste 3.5 grams | eBay . This is what I have been using for about 10 years at least. It's not hard to do this...maybe 15 minutes. Pop the speaker grill off, lift the keyboard and lay it over the touch pad, remove about 12 screws and 4 on the heat sink.
Before I did any of the CPU mods on my MK3's 1.6 and 2.0 the fans hardly ever run. With the T7200 2.0 Core 2 Duo it runs more but still in the 50c range but the T7600 runs like Driller said... more and least was noisier to me and temps @ high 60c-70c ....but it sure does rock and roll -
I am about to do a CPU upgrade from a T2500 to a T7200 and decided to check temps
on this CF-51 MK3 with the original T2500 before cleaning and new thermal paste. I used
SpeedFan and at Idle in XP things seem pretty normal with temps around 40 deg C. Here
are the actual numbers:
Idle in XP:
CPU Util 0 to 3%
HDD 35 deg C
Temp 1 37
Temp 2 41
Core 0 40
Core 1 41
Playing 2 High Def (720p) youtube videos for about 8 minutes:
CPU Util 75 to 85%
HDD 41
Temp 1 81
Temp 2 87
Core 0 85
Core 1 87
How about that 87 deg C max? Not sure if this is normal, I do believe that there is thermal
protection shutdown and it did not come on - anyone know the setpoint temp? Thinking of
running something like Super Pi but am a bit nervous as to how hot it might get. I'm not
sure what Temp 1 and 2 are, perhaps one is Northbridge and the other Graphics, anybody
know for sure?
Edit: Ran the Sisoft Sandra Stress test with emphasis on CPU tasks and it got up to 91
deg C fairly quickly with both CPUs at 100% utilization. I decided to shut it down before it
got much hotter just to play it safe. -
Swapped the processor today and noticed that while there was a lot of paste, nearly
all of it oozed out and the heat sink and CPU had none over about 75% of the die
area. It was also dried out. Put in the 7200 with a very thin layer of Artic Silver 5.
Tested it open with the keyboard out and it did not get much over 71 deg C even at
100% utilization but we'll see how it does closed up. Both fans were working but I'd
sure like to see a more powerful one for the CPU.
Where the heck are the Northbridge and GPU, on the bottom? I like the independent
CPU heat sink, makes a lot of sense.
Just noticed that speed fan is not reporting fan RPMs or clock rate probably due to
not being configured properly - Panasonic is not listed, anyone know the proper
setup configurations. -
Now with the T7200:
Playing 2 High Def (720p) youtube videos for about 8 minutes:
CPU Util 65 to 78%
HDD 40
Temp 1 71
Temp 2 75
Core 0 73
Core 1 76
I did not do this in a very scientific way, unfortunately, it depends on many things, ambient
temp, starting temp, cpu load, but it is at least a ball park. CPU load seems to be about
10% lower and about 5 deg lower on temps.
Ran SiSoft Burn In test and got these results after only 3 tests, not even 3 iterations:
CPU Util 100% most of the time, seems to drop very briefly between tests:
HDD 40 deg C
Temp 1 90
Temp 2 90
Core 0 88
Core 1 90
I have always found core temps to be highly dependent on CPU utilization so these numbers
do not surprise me. On the other hand it is about 70 deg ambient in here and I'm fairly
certain that the system would overheat on a very hot summer day at 100 deg ambient. I
wonder if SpeedFan is properly calibrated for the sensors, but they do read about 40 deg
C typing a post when the CPU utilization is very low.
I have a feeling that the system might
throttle back the clock as the temp gets close to overheating so that might keep it going
even on a hot day. -
If ur running XP, give Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) - Homepage, Downloads, Help, Docu, FAQ, News - www.NotebookHardwareControl.net a shot...
If ur using a newer Windows-OS, just try RMClock Utility. Products. CPU Rightmark
U will get an cooler machine with a longer lasting battery through undervolting...processors after core 2 duo are not supported. -
Thanks, I'll give that program a try.

That program says that I need at least .NET 2.0 installed and I have 4.0 but
it will not run. I'm not too familiar with .NET is it possible to install both
versions - anyone know? Quick google, looks like it is possible:
Installing Multiple Versions of the .NET Framework -
Yes you can install multiple version of NET

Thanks, it is working now. I get this message under ACPI:
"ACPI Control System is not yet configurated for this system."
I read that XP does not use ACPI on systems that are very old,
not the situation here, or on systems with a BIOS on the
"Bad BIOS" list known to have issues with ACPI. Wondering if
I need to update the BIOS or if this is normal with the CF-51.
Anyone else get the same message?
Here is Microsoft's article on ACPI:
