I figured out the clamp because I couldn't get the CPU out with the heaviest tool I was willing to use, a gingerly applied finger nail. The careful study which ensued led to the discovery of the clamp. It's not coming out with the heat sink!

just picked up another cf-51RC4EFBM from bestbuy13 for 44 bucks, 10 hours showing on the clock had the ram and caddy and put in a 320GBWD ide drive. temps show 30-40 C . getting ready to swap in the T7600 on this one and see how it runs. Still the T7200 is best for the buck but am looking to max it out. Thinking about one of those ide/sata adapters and see how they do, I think Ruggedsolutions has fixed up...........Driller

Maybe you have a better idea or better luck... -

I have an adapter I re-soldered with the connectors on the same side and I still don't think there is enough room in the 51 caddy without major cutting. -

So I guess this fits in this thread... I've got a CF-51 with a Pentium M 1.73. I'm guessing this is a MK1? And this can be upgrade to the 2.2 Pm correct? Thanks!
-
It kinda does but kinda doesn't either. This thread mainly concerns upgrading the CPU in those models that started life with a Core Duo CPU installed. I don't think it has been brought up upgrading the Pentium M series CF-51s. So good question from you.
What I would suggest you doing is to first download CPU-Z (do a web search), install and run. Look for the motherboard chipset and then search the web to find what CPUs are compatable with that chipset. That is how this whole thread started. Someone asked a question, I did some research and through experimentation, I found that the CF-51 MK 3 series was in fact capable of supporting higher level CPUs. Even though I did screw up a bit on my CPU numbers, I did get alot of people here doing the same thing. That is upgrading their CPUs.
Here is your chance. Do some research and let the folks here know what you come up with. -

The one listed as a work in progress, it's now a 2.1 Ghz -
How hard is it to get to the CPU in this thing? Do I need to gut the whole laptop?
-
-
Wow, that IS easy! Thanks!

So the T2300E is rated at 31 watt TDP and the T7200 is rated at 34 watt TDP.
I read that the TDP is the amount of heat the cooling solution needs to be able to dissipate.
Can that be calculated into rough degrees of running temperature difference?
How much more heat does the T7200 generate? In official specs anyway.
I could not find any official max temperature listings at Intel.
Mnem?? -
They're both based on the same 65nm die thickness so the Max Temp is going to be very close if not the same; that's a safe operating maximum, not a calculated operating temp. Your operating temp is going to vary based on the cooling solution, CPU loading and of course rated device THD.
Since the only thing you're changing here is the device THD, do a simple calculation of percentage; the difference between 31W & 34W is 3W, or somewhere between 9%-10% of the THD of the original.
The stock cooling solution should be more than adequate; in this case, you'll probably only notice that the fan kicks up to full speed a little more often. Temps should never vary much more than that 10% or so as compared to your current processor, if at all.

Yes, it would be nice to have a handle on them. The 51's that you have at the PO ....are they Core Duo's.
-
Blair, should be Core Duo's. Model #s CF51RC4KFBM. According to seller, one has a missing key, one with minor crack at bottom casing and two 'dusty' units. Will collect them this Thursday and see how things go. Still looking out for T7200 but have 4gb RAM and new Samsung 160gb HDD in hand. Ought to keep me busy for a while... before I PM you regarding W7 install and that bio-metric thingie

Hi guys!
I recently got in the Cf--51's. I just ordered 2. strip down models.
Has anyone been able to get sata to work on the cf-51's yet? -
Not sure why you would want to? Running through the IDE bus would net you no gains?
-
250gb IDE hd, = 80-100$
500gb Sata hd = 45. -

No room at all. I did it with my CF-29 and it was tight and even less in the 51. I would look into the new samsung drives. I got this from the CF-29 F.A.Q.

ULTIMATE Toughbook CF-18 CF-29 IDE to SATA Upgrade kit - eBay (item 250757008914 end time Jan-20-11 13:32:03 PST)
So $45.00 + $67.00 =$112.00 for SATA
and $55.00 + $00.00 = $55.00 for IDE
Some time ago me and Tomcat57 ran some tests here http://forum.notebookreview.com/pan...using-ide-sata-adapter-vs-samsunghm160hc.html

Has anyone tried out to see if the CF-51 would take a lower end quad core. Seen a few dip down in price and thought of giving it a try.

I never have but will check later tonight to see . You can find cheaper cpu's than the T7200 @ $35.00-$40.00

You should download CPU-Z http://download.cnet.com/cpu-z/3000-2086_4-10050423.html This program will tell you what kind of mother board / chipset you have. -

Thanks for the tip. I have gotten a lot better on computer stuff over the last few years, but still get screwed up on cpu swapping.

Please, hepl me. Thanks.Attached Files:

You actually rotate it more than 90 degrees. You will see the CPU and sled slightly move toward the lever. Once you see that, the CPU will freely pull out.

So, is the consensus of this thread that
DOABLE -> T7200, T7400, T7600
NOT Doable -> T7300, T7500
Not Tested -> Quad Core -
toughasnails Toughbook Moderator Moderator
DOABLE -> T7200, T7400, T7600 Yes (667MHz FSB)
NOT Doable -> T7100, T7250, T7300, T7500, T7700 and the T7800 No (800MHz FSB)
Not Tested -> Quad Corewishfull thinking:laugh: NO (1066MHz FSB at least)

So if you find a CPU that matches the above you should be good to go BUT check here first http://ark.intel.com/products/family/26548 This should give you all the info you need on the CPU you are looking at. Just use the drop down to chose your CPU -
Hello, I went out and won a CF-51PF4DEBM for $89.00 plus 24.00 shipping
Pulled my spare 80gig for my Cf-29 added 4 gig Pc-2 5300 ram and missed the post not to get a T-7500.. I need to fine a home for it but I am close to a T-7200 on ebay.. My CF-30 just hit the door and as they say( on to the Next.)
Thanks again I love playing with Toughbooks..

The Pentium-M version of the CF-51 can be upgraded to a 2.0.
Is there a specific Pentium-M 2.0 I should look for? -
I upgraded a factory CF-51 Mk2LL 1.73 MHz Pentium M to 2.0. I have swapped out a lot of Pentium M's on other computers and haven't seen many different versions of the 2.0 Pentium M and they all worked. This family maxes out at 2.2. I have a 2.1 that I am going to try out in a CF-50 project. The 2.2's are 68 to 89 dollars usually. The 2.1's are around 30 to 40 ish and for 15 to 25 bucks you can pick up the 2.0. I haven't personally compared the 2.0,2.1 and 2.2 with a bench mark program but older reviews on line there isn't a big performance gain over the cheaper 2.0. Just search for the numbers below on eBay. You just want to search the CPU section for only 760,770 or 780 is what I usually do.
2.0 760
2.1 770
2.2 780
There is also a 2.1 765 model that is a lower FBS and lower wattage.
List of Intel Pentium M microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dothan series is the one you want.
I AM ADDING THIS BECAUSE THE MK1 AND MK1LL ARE 400 FBS NOT 533 FBS, THIS IS AM BRING FROM ANOTHER POST I MADE IN ANOTHER THREAD AND I THINK IT WILL BE USEFUL TO THE GUIDE.
But one thing to remember is your model is a 400 MHz FBS model. The model I was talking about is a 533 MHz FBS model.
Lets take a look at yours Processor 725, 1.60 GHz400 MHz FBS
By looking at the chart in the link provided by Sadlmkr this is what we have.
1.6 GHz 2 MB 400 MT/s 16× 0.988–1.34 V 21 W Socket 479
Your options look like the 725, 735, 745, 755 and 765
I am not sure if your motherboard will handle the 533 MHZ FBS speed. If it will it does open up more options for you, but if you ram is slower than 533 MHZ than your ram will be holding you back.
Also some of the older 400 MHZ machines has smaller heat sinks.
There is a pinmod you can do to over clock the chips but that is only available on 915 Intel based motherboards. Your motherboard is a Intel 855GM chipset so I think you are stuck at 400 MHZ FBS
