Well that's a good question. Of all the 51's I have bought not one had a harddrive in it but my guess it's a Toshiba or Hitachi.

    40GB 4200RPM Drives.

I believe most of the older toughbooks came with Travelstar drives. Whether it was IBM or Hitachi is just a matter of age.

I would bet that the early version mk1 came with the slow 40gb 4200 rpm Hitachi and later the 5400 rpm 60gb Hitachi

The specs on the cf-51 makes these Toughbooks not too bad running on XP, the best performance gain would be on having at least a 5400rpm hard drive

most of mine I think were toshiba, though I replaced them with wd3200beve or the samsung 160gb ide drives for the laptop.

    Update!
It is evident that the MK3LL I have was originally specified with a 80GB 5200RPM HD. Why it is fitted with a lower capacity/speed version is anyones guess!

My guess is that it's been changed

Some of us here buy brand new Toughbooks
    Myself I have personaly bought new a cf-30 mk-2,cf-29 mk-1,cf-28 mk-2

All my other Toughbooks have been used, and you never know what the original owners have done to change them

Hard drive changes (because of personal data) are common

Hard drive crashes in laptops are also quite common. Someone may have went cheap and bought the lower capacity replacement drive from Panasonic.

If it is indeed an ex Goverment issue one, then they probably low balled it! It would also explain the low hours as they are lazy useless tossers!
Bit miffed that I paid my taxes and now I can't use the wireless!

My CF-51 MK3LL has now revereted bac to the original drive (after I toasted my replacement Seagate 160GB one) which is a Hotatchi Travelstar 80GB. And good job I had a spare caddy too as it was a duff caddy that killed my Hard drive.
