    Hello Group,
Started with Vista and upgraded to Windows 7 64bit and system reports still running in 32 bit.
I loaded the suggested drivers on the Panasonic ToughBook Win 7 info page. Kind of a long list there, but did the ones that applied to my computer. Wonder if I am missing something. Hope someone might have some ideas... bought a 64 bit only piece of software that will not install until I can sort this out.

I was hoping for a simple BIOS selection or something.... did not see anything there either.

    CF52-FKN10AM is the model number.

    Thank you in adavance,
    George

You don't switch between 32 and 64-bit modes of operation.

Basically the hardware is 32-bit and 64-bit capable. Which OS you install will determine which mode you run in. It sounds like because you had Vista 32-bit (although you haven't outright specified that), it has stayed a 32-bit OS after upgrading to Win7.

I have tested and installed WinXP 64-bit on a CF-52G (the EU equivalent of the CF-52F, no core hardware difference) so you might just need to reinstall the OS from scratch as a 64-bit OS.

Thank you for your reply.. The Vista was 32 bit, yes. The thing that concerns me is when you right click on 'my computer" and go to properties it says x86.

I guess I could try a total install from the win7 64 bit disk rely in the process it asked me if I wanted to do one type of install that would save a director called win old or something and that is what I choose so that would not be a ground up 64 bit OS deployment. I also did not know if that HD partition with utilities was worth saving. I will try a new install this AM.. I needed a bigger HD anyways
Thanks again for the ideas. I want to get past this hassle and start enjoying my Toughbook... So cool.

x86 is "proper" name for 32-bit, so that's entirely normal. Enjoy the unit :)

I am trying a clean install now.. is it possible that the OEM partition is causing it to revert to 32 bit?

I don't think so, are you sure you're using the X64 disc? I have never heard of this happening. Are you sure the hardware is 64 bit compatible?

SOLVED: My mistake. I was using a 64 bit Win 7 upgrade Vista on a 32 bit version of Vista so it would only enable 32 bit Win 7. I got a full version of Win 7 and all is good. Been using Macs for a few years so have to get back into the Microsoft revision mindset again. Thank you for all the ideas everyone.

Were you able to install any of the Panny drivers for 64Bit? I think you would be the 1st as they say they are not 64 Bit capable. However, on the new CF-31 you can do 64 bit, but I have not seen anything on there drivers page stating any choices?

    Hello Toyo,
As far I can tell they all installed OK. Windows 7 seems to handle 32 bit application and drivers seamlessly. At his point I have 2 exclamation points in device manager for two unknown devices... I would guess that these are devices that have not received driver installs and I have not figured out what they are. The driver for the SD card reader needs the update patch before moving up to Win 7.
I put in a 500 Gb 7200 HD in before I did the Win 7 Pro install.
All in all it went pretty smoothly and well worth the time investment. I guess the CF-52 is not regarded as a "real" Toughbook by the hard core forum folks, but compared to my MacBook Pro it is a Sherman tank. I will be using it to handle card media on video shoots.. the perfect laptop for lugging around on locations. I also noticed that all the I/O jacks are much more rugged than any computer I have ever used.
The next project is how to hack an eSATA port without using my Express Card adapter. WiFi and WWAN cards are coming in the mail....

If you look at the install PDF, on the far right you will see a description of how to tell which programs are unknown. They are usually the Hotkey or Panny Misc.

Just to clarify, did you install 32 or 64 Bit?

64-bit drivers are on the way from Panasonic, just not quite there yet.

Pretty sure there are development versions of x64 drivers for the hotkeys/misc driver around...

64 Bit Win 7... may rival XP Pro, so I am glad I made the jump. Figured go as far forward as I can before I install all my software and other gizmos.
Still have 2 mystery devices with ! next to them. All drivers installed. The process is let's say intensely manual since there is no one single patch for all these device drivers. I went down the list... good practice run if Pinecone is right and 64bit ones are around the corner.
Now to figure out the !s....

I'm not saying they'll turn up promptly next week at 7am, but give it a couple of months and I'll wager they'll be around for download. :)

Toyo- I didn't see in the install PDF, on the far right a description of how to tell which programs are unknown. I have the install PDF, but did not see that part. Can you cut and paste if you feel like it?

Look under the Comments section. They give different descriptions, and different ways for you to look and see which one's they are. The drivers that have a "Unknown Device" that is. You have to go into the driver details and scroll down the list and you will see exactly what I am talking about.

Let me know if you need more. I might try to install 64 on a spare HDD & Caddy I have.

I know on my last install of W7 I did not load but just a few Panny drivers and it works perfectly. I think MS has updated there drivers lately.
