As I have been a good boy this year, I decided to treat myself to a CF-52!
Its only a MK1 CF-52CCABVBE with 1300hrs. Actually I bought this sometime ago but broke the cardinal rule of Toughbooks:
Rule 1 - Do not buy a Toughbook without a caddy!
I had sorted out a used caddy/HD from eBay.com a few weeks ago which hopefully will appear soon. However when a brand new caddy and 160GB HD turned up on eBay.co.uk on Monday, I couldn't resist. I really wanted this up and running for the Xmas period.
Few issues so far. The first being the recovery disc. Despite being labelled as an XP it turned out to be Vista Business. Secondly, the HD had been excluded from the boot order in the BIOS, which caused a bit of head scratching when the "No operating system installed" message came up.
Other than that, I am quite happy so far. Plan to try the 5100 wireless card in it. Think it has the 4965 as standard. Ideally need the most powerful wireless reception I can get as it will be used away from the home so will need to find a hotspot to access. I was surprised the 5100 worked in the CF-51 off the bat despite not showing in the BIOS. I think I saw that the 5100 and 4965 share the same drivers. Unfortunately the wireless cover is secured by a sercurity Torx screw, so will have to source the appropiate tool to remove it.
Initial assesment: If you like the CF-51, you'll love the CF-52!
Can I also take this opportunity to thanks those who have helped out over the past few months. It is much appreciated and I look forward to asking more stupid/newbie question in the New Year! Who knows, might be able to answer one or two of the easy ones.

Hey that's great, you finally got a caddy. Yes I love my 52 too but I will tell you my MK1 is a lot faster than my MK2 and panny will tell you that too. NOW
you should try out a SSD for it + W7...talk about fast.

I just got a CF-52 also. Mine is a MK2 CF-52GCMBVAM. If not for the 5200 hours showing in BIOS, I would swear this thing is new. NO scratches or any other damage. There wasn't even any dust on the keyboard. Anyway, I digress. As for that security screw. That stopped me for about 15 seconds. One trick I learned years ago is that you can use a flat-tipped screwdriver of a size to fit inside the screw opening. Twist and off it comes. Well, most of the time. On this particular screw, it is so small that when I tried the screwdriver trick, that center pin snapped off and from there I used a Torx bit to get the screw out. My CF-52 came with the 5100 card.
CF-52 Early Xmas Present!
