I am working on a CF-52 (CF-52MLBBD2M) that has begun to over-heat during intensive CPU activity.
Software I've installed shows CPU temp peaks approaching 100 degrees C (and automatic shutdown).
I suspect the thermal pads have degraded (age catches up to all of us), but I have not been able
to locate any posts regarding the thickness of the thermal pads used (for CPU & GPU) in this model.
(The fan runs at full speed during these peaks, so I don't think it is the cause.)
If you know what thicknesses are needed, I'd appreciate any guidance you could give.
Thanks!

First of all, I would pull it apart and check the fan for dust.
The first CF 52 you take apart is a challenge and will take an hour or 2.
Pretty much has to come completely apart to gain access to the fan. -
A 52 might not have thermal pads. It might be grease only.
I have had several apart, but I can't recall for sure.
The service manual may tell us more. -

Thank you very much for your reply Shawn. Afraid I've never been in the bottom half of a CF-52 before. I've had CF-51s completely apart, but this is new to me. From your posting, it appears that it does use thermal pads, but I guess there is no way of knowing for sure what their thickness was when new (unless you happen to know this).
I will definitely be checking for dust when I get it apart, but I wanted to order some thermal pad material before doing this, so I could put it right back together again. Even if the thermal material is not the primary problem, after so many years, it is probably contributing to the problem, and best to replace it while apart, I would think.
Is the GPU in the same area? I'm thinking if the CPU material has deteriorated, the GPU material is probably about the same. I'm also wondering what the difference is between "Heat Dissipation Rubber NRP" and "Thermal Rubber NRP"?
Thanks again for your help. Is there any chance of me receiving a copy of the service manual? I don't have it, and would feel a lot more confident in pulling it apart if I had one. -

Does that work both ways, or can someone who is well-established send a PM to me?

Just in case you didn't know it's not really a PM. It's " Start a new conversation" . Just click on Shawn's name and you should see it

The other question I am seeking an answer to is regarding the correct thicknesses of thermal pads to use in the CF-52 (CF-52MLBBD2M) for the CPU & GPU. I know the correct thickness is critical for proper function. Are original Panasonic pads still available from any sources? Anyone?
-
I just purchased an assortment of 1/4 sheets and cut them to size.
I use the swag method to determine thickness. -
OK. What brand/product do you use? I've seen some people swear by a certain brand and others swear at it. It's hard to know who knows what they are talking about when reading product reviews. You are obviously very knowledgeable.

Man, I got you fooled...ha ha
Well, before the owner went left of center frozencpu was good.
Then I just contacted a manufacturer direct and they sent me free samples. Woo hoo.
If I remember, I will try to find the brand.
I doubt that it actually makes much difference which brand. The important part is the thermal conductivity number w/k or whatever it is called. Get the best you can.SHEEPMAN! likes this. -
did you contact fujipoly? -
I beleive it was fujipoly.
It has been a couple years and I had a stroke since then so a few details in my gray matter are fuzzy. -
Funny you should ask . . . I just, minutes ago, sent an email to the Fujipoly Customer Engineering Resource Center in San Jose, asking them to make recommendations for this application from their product line. If they answer, I'd be happy to share it.

I use "IC Diamond 7 Carat 1.5g Thermal Compound Paste Grease (ICD7)"
