The mood was slightly dampened, though.
    1) I was unable to install Win XP on it. It wouldn't go past trying to read the install CD and I got the BSOD.
    2) The computer came 'custom configured' for my work and there were a ton of drivers missing. I spent a few hours downloading from the site in Japan until I only have 1 driver missing but I do not know what it is for (Unknown device)

So, it's a CF53-JALZY1M. can anyone tell me what it's supposed to be?

I don't see a touchscreen or fingerprint reader so thats not it. As always, any help is appreciated.

In the device manager, what is the hardware id of the unknown device?

    Maybe a stupid question, but the CF-50 series (50-53) are semi-rugged ?

Is the reason for this, because they have a fan ?

Is the cost/price of a the fastest CF-31 higher as the fastest CF-53 ?

The CF-50 and 51 are Business rugged. When they did away with the CF-74 semi rugged, they kind of combined them in with the CF-52. (The 74 line never had a dedicated video card) creating a semi rugged wide screen. They try to keep sizes the same so docks and parts like that will work with the newer models. (although some newer models need a new dock and can't fully use the older dock)

The fan is not the reason as the 31 has a sealed fan, the case and padding isn't as rugged as the fully rugged line, the port covers aren't as protected. The 53 doesn't have a dedicated card and they have kept the 52 series. So I am thinking the 53 is taking place of the 74 as the smaller, lighter semi-rugged area that the 74 was in but in a wide screen format.

This is the way it arrived from my employer. They flashed the hard drive and pass them out to us without any regard to the usability of the computer. They come with Windows 7 installed and many of the programs we use in the field operate poorly (if at all) under Windows 7. That is why I opened the other thread about installing Win XP on it. I will try installing the missing driver and see what happens. I plan on using 'their' hard drive for the sole purpose of logging into the company network, updating my password, uploading updates ect. Kind of a waste of a 500 GB 7200 rpm hard drive.

If you have the Pro or ULT versions try an XP virtual machine. It's free from MS and provides good compatibility for many programs, they can access the CD and USB ports etc.

I've already put in a new hard disk in a new caddy and loaded Win XP on it. It runs perfectly. It runs all my applications (just installed LM90 today - a DOS program) and I couldn't be happier. When I need my 'company' computer I just swap out the hard disks (takes 5 seconds) then swap them back when I need to work. Best of both worlds.
