    I have a CF-72VCJUZQM bios version V4.00L10

not much PC experience, no laptop. but i heard a 60 gb travelstar ata-5 will work over here:
    http://toughbook.wikispaces.com/

hoping it was the same, i got this drive:
    601001852-02 60GB IDE Hitachi TravelStar 60GH 5400RPM 2MB 12.5mm IC25T060ATCS05-0

I saw that part number listed as ATA-5 a few places, except where i bought it it said ATA-6. It was only $40 so i crossed my fingers it was an error and ordered it.

installed it, when i boot i get:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE. ROM
    Invalis partition table

i don't think it was possible to get the cable on wrong...

Any suggestions? if it looks like this one is hopeless, can anyone suggest an alternative?

    Thanks!

    Ed

Are you sure this is a hard drive-related message? as far as i recall, that looks like the LAN card trying to network-boot.

Hmmmm... And you were able to cram that 12.5mm height drive into your caddy? I know the CF-28s are designed around a 9.5 mm height drive... It's possible that by shoehorning that 1/2" thick drive in there, you damaged it or placed enough pressure on the top cover to "pinch" the insides...

Anyone else here with more knowledge of the CF-72s? WILL a 12.5mm height drive fit in them?

Oh, DUH - No! ATA-5 LOOKS like ATA-6, but it's NOT. An ATA-6 drive will run on an older machine with an ATA-5 controller, but ATA-5 bus drives only run at 66mhz, while ATA-6 data bus runs at 100 mhz... And, as I recall, the difference in form factor is also part of the ATA-6 specification - to be ATA-6, it HAS to be 9.5mm...

Set the bios boot menu to cd rom first. Your harddrive need to parttion

Note: Is it really 12.5mm height harddrive? I don't think so.

I believe Gravitar is right here, as usual... The PXE is the pre-execute commands and has nothing to do with your hard drive. Mine does the same thing. I didn't know it was for lan-boot though. I will have to disable that myself. Your info comes on the third line there that says:

Invalis partition table (should read 'invalid partition table'); and Ohlip is correct. Set your BIOS to boot to CDROM first and boot with a bootable CD to partition your new drive. Once that is done, then you can install your OS.

Based on Googling the part # and the ATA-5 designation, yup.

Yes, the PXE is the preboot environment - it's trying to boot from the network; the CF-28 BIOS defaults to that if it does not see an MBR on any installed drive. When it says invalid media, it means the connection to the network, or your network cable.

However - if that part # you posted REALLY IS the HD you got, according to my Googling, it IS an ATA-5 drive and will not work if your laptop has an ATA-6 controller. I believe the CF-28s DO have; I'm not sure about your CF-72.

yep, i just needed to format it. the LAN thing threw me.

it is thicker than the original drive, but i was surprised that it didn't feel tight in there. the thin plastic cover snapped in easily.

the pink sticky rubber wrap had to stretch extra, and i'm sure the shock absorption is somewhat effected... that should only matter when its running, right? i plan to pack the laptop on offroad motorcycle trips.

the pink rubber was getting a little weather checked in one spot - anyone know where i can get a replacement?

thanks for the help - just doubled my hard drive capacity for $40!
