Hi There,
This may be a dumb question but I don't get the traditional single
"beep" from the POST test when my computer boots. I think I
remember it making that "beep" before I took it a part (uh-oh) but
I'm not sure. It seems to boot just fine otherwise. It just doesn't
go "beep" after the post. If I press the Power button to shut it
down, I get a beep so I guess the speaker is working. What am
I missing?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I haven't come across a laptop that bips at boot. The bip is on desktops only.

Ignore Naton, he doesn't know anything about Toughbooks.
Traditionally Toughbooks beep when you attempt to turn them off (whilst holding down the power button) before they boot.
I've owned a 73 and it DID beep when I booted it. But if it isn't beeping, I wouldn't worry about it, especially if it's working fine.
I'm sure others (teo?) have an explanation as to why it sometimes beeps and sometimes doesn't.
Thanks -
Hi There,
Well, I couldn't remember but I thought it did. My Averatec does
the single short beep after the POST.
Actually I read in the CF-73 service manual that it is supposed to
beep.
I just don't know why it doesn't.
Thanks for responding!
Good Luck!

Hi There,
Rob, you snuck one in there while I was responding to the other guy.
I'm just worried that I've not got something hook back up right. It
was the first time I've had this one apart (boy do they sticky-tape
that keyboard down!).
I have done some searching on the web and IBM compatible BIOS
POST indicates no beep = "No Power, Loose Card or Short." It
looks to me that I have power (the LED on the front indicates power
plus my battery doesn't hold anything but a surface charge and it
boots and runs fine).
Loose card? Maybe. I would like to know is which card?
Short? Possibly. I would have expected something more catastrophic
in nature. I don't know.
I'll take her apart again and double check everything. I was just
wondering if anyone else had seen this and knew what to check.
Good Luck!

Hi There,
Well, I might have discovered the area of trouble. My cooling
fan doesn't seem to be running. Funny that the system will boot
and run. Maybe I didn't let it run long enough to overheat and
shutdown.
Now the question is: what is the problem? Is it the fan itself,
or is it the rear PCB board. Any ideas on how to check?
Thanks for your expertise!
Good Luck!

Run Burnmax to heat the CPU up to see if the fan turns on.
If that is what is wrong then you have your answer.

Hi There,
Thanks for the suggestion. I found a copy of BurnMax and tried it.
My fan does indeed turn on. So that probably isn't the problem.
I took the system down again to look for anything that might be the
problem. So far, I cannot find anything (as yet). I put it back together
to test and run BurnMax. Still no beep. I'll power it down so I can put
the front cover back on. I had it off to see the cooling fan.
Anyway, I'm still puzzled.
Good Luck!

At this point I SERIOUSLY won't worry about it lol

The only time any of the tested laptops made a beep is when the AC charger is disconnected while the laptop is ON.
