Hello Toughbook fans,
I purchased a CF-74 and I'm trying to figure out if this is a touchscreen model. It was listed as NOT being touch however when I google the model number I definitely see some references online that it is a touchscreen. Model is CF-74ECECXBM. It's not a big deal to me if it isn't a ts, I actually owned a CF-73 before and honestly never used the feature much but I'd like to know what I have here. What made me question further is it has the Fujitsu Touch Panel driver installed in the device manager, would this be possible if not ts? One thing supporting that it isn't a ts is I haven't been able to get even a little bit of touch functionality working on it even though I purchased the factory image DVD from heartlandsi restored it and then I also purchased the stylus which arrived today. No go from the Touchscreen calibration utility though.

If you had read the FAQ you would find that the configurator is the #1 thing to check first!
According to the configurator that is listed in the FAQ, you will see that it is the following:
Model Number:
CF-74ECECXBM
Status:
DISCONTINUED
MSRP:
$4,127
Description: Intel Core Duo T2500 2.0GHz (Centrino), 13.3" Touch XGA, 1GB+1GB(Total 2GB),80GB, Intel 802.11a+b+g, DVD/CDRW, WIN XP SP2, Smartcard
So, according to Panny it IS a touchscreen. Now to answer your questions: YES, it is BROKEN! 99/100 CF-74's will have defunct touch panels based on my experience. These clowns that sell these units do NOT test ANYTHING, which is why you should only buy from reputable Toughbook vendors (like me, Jeff, Teo, Rick, Alex, Blair or any other regular from here).
Depending on the price, you may or may NOT want to return it!.
JEFF (AKA Sadlmkr) replaces touch panels on a regular bases here and will charge a VERY reasonable fee to do so. You would pay for the new panel + Jeffs labor and ship the machine to him. He would replace it and send it back.
Jeff, your turn
P.S, welcome to the nuthouse! I'm your host: ROB -
Can you send me a picture of your [control panel][device manager] with hid expanded and mouse expanded.
CF-74 "I think" uses USB driven TS found in hid unlike CF-29 and below which use a psmouse driven TS found in mice.
Also a shot of your C:\util\drivers\touchscreen.
Does a TS show up at all in your bios?
If this yields a huh? on your part...not to worry. Let me know what you find "or not" and we'll work from there.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah per the specs it should be a touchscreen which is why I'm puzzled by the fact that it doesn't work, which explains why I'm posting.
Shouldn't be broken with 10 hours on the machine but I guess it's possible.

I've seen one CF-74 unit with 30 hours on it with a defunct touch panel...
It's a shame that these were manufactured so poorly! -

I'm thinking first off that you have too many hid compliant devices.
For instance the CF-30 Mk1 I am on shows only fujitsu touch panel (usb) under hid.
Under mice I have hid compliant mouse which I think "was" possibly "is" the gps.
Also on mine under mice the second of two devices is the touchpad.
I see that you have (I'd forgotten) the synaptics touchpad which is great as you have edge scrolling.
On to the touchscreen in bios question.
A LITTLE HELP HERE....my CF-30 C (4 of them) don't show touchscreen anywhere in bios.....and they are all factory touch. Someone with a CF-74 jump in here please. (does it show?)
THESE ARE MY HIGHLIGHTS/ QUOTES

The model CF-73, CF-74, cf-19, cf-30, CF-31 and even Y, T series uses a USB for TS and most of them doesn't show up on the bios. The only thing to know is with the model no. or untill you install the OS. Without the exact driver it will show up on device manager as HID.......
Now! with your situation. You installed the OS by a factory recovery disk and on the Device manager it show up with correct driver the fush..itsu touch panel ...r. That driver will not show up without the presence of a hardware on the system and when you do the calibration utility. It has no response or anything. It means the TS is defective or prolly If you have the guts to open the LCD panel check the connection from TS pcb board that connect to ribbon cable. Maybe its not hook up properly. As what you said its like a brand new unit with only about 10Hrs. when you bought it. I do not beleive it will not be broken on that short period of time unless somebody do the magic on resetting the accumulated time. But if not, It may only have an open connection.
Edit: for additional info. This unit might have been on the factory Asr refurbished that may have been taken out the TS panel and replace with the glass only leaving the TS pcb board still connected on the USB terminal. Its also a posibility.

What he /|\ said you can take to the bank.
Hey Teo (ohlip), did you ever see so many hid devices?
It's fairly easy to check the connections on the mobo too.
Hey mjc do you want to trade for a CF-29?......PM. I've been looking for a 2.0Ghz 74.

Thank you for laying out the options. I may look into getting it repaired. (Have to see what the costs are with that) I won't use the ts option very much but then again this is the closest I've been to having a 'new' one so it would be nice to have everything in working order.

PM and I'll lay it out. You may be surprised.

Jef, Umn...your right! Why there are so many HID....supose to be only one or two after the fush..itsu and on the touchpad.
Ok! Mc...try to uninstall the HID and leave only one or two on fush..tsu and on touchpad. Do not reboot it yet. Reinstall the TS driver by double clicking ftSetup.exe on the utilty. let it finish the installation and then reboot. Let what hardware the OS found and installed and see what come up

On my recently purchased CF-74 (CF-74GCDCDBM) there is a touchscreen and it does show in the BIOS MAIN screen. Mine is currently set for Auto and the Current Status is Tablet. In the Device Manager under HID, my touchscreen shows as: FCL USB Pen Tablet. My results may be a bit different as I am running Win 7 on this machine. Under XP IIRC, the touchscreen in the BIOS would show as touchscreen. On my CF-30 MK3, when running Win 7, the touchscreen shows in BIOS as Tablet and under XP, it shows as touchscreen.

Re-visiting this. I recently acquired a CF-74 GCDADBM. Two items in device manager under HID 1) FCL USB Pen Tablet and 2)HID compliant Device.
I set Touch in bios to touchscreen and it would not calibrate. Re-set to tablet and it calibrates fine.
Theory/s
Fujitsu Touch Panel is not installed correctly or maybe it's not a Fujitsu TP???. I don't know who set this up.
Attempted download of Mark 3 G Touchscreen file from jp site. "Device not allowed". And it's running Vista. Interesting ...so here it is FWIW.
CF-74 Touch or not?
