I have got my hands on a CF-74 which obviously has screen damage. Unfortunately the seller misled me about the RAM and the power supply, so I am at the moment unable to see if anything works.
Too be honest I am not particularly bothered about a touchscreen replacement and would be happy with just an ordinary display. Having said that I might be able to source a touchscreen from a CF-72. Looks like they are both 13.3".
Is it likely that Panasonic used the same touchscreen across the model ranges in the same size and that they will be interchangable?
Is it going to be possible to replace the touchscreen with a regular screen?
Cheers!

The touchscreen is a panel that goes in front of the regular display. I removed one from a CF29 and replaced it with clear plexiglas.

Thanks!
I guess its going to be a case of whay exactly is damaged. Being first in the line of fire, the touchscreen must be the most vunerable. I have taken a regular screen apart and marvelled at all the layers!
I am counting that Panasonic rationalised their screen as I can't stand people throwing things away that are repairable economically! -

Drat!
Oh well, if I am patient and observant, perhaps a screen will become available from a compatable model.
There is a distinct possibility that the seller has been less than honest about it functioning anyway. If its DOA its unsalvagable.
Thanks for the replies! -

I am pretty sure that the 29 is usb, in my sleepiness the last cpl days I may be wrong on that one, but I know the 30 era machines on are for sure usb

Thought I would bump this with a pretty picture!
No one have any suggestings about a suitable replacement?Attached Files:

Ha! The first search I did brought me back here!
http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/475752-touch-screen-question-2.html
I was hoping it would be a common or garden variety that could be salvaged from a lesser laptop. The closest I can find is a TM133XGA0201 but there are no pics to check the similarity. -
So the touchscreen I have is also the TM133XGA0301-1. Looks like the 01/02 suffix relates to the screen being either matte (01) or glossy (02). So we can decode most of the designation as related to aspect ratio, voltage. size and display and indeed the finish. Just need to know what the other part of the number relates to and whether its relevant to the objective of finding a normal screen to replace the touchscreen. Perhaps 03 makes it a model for touchscreens.

You need to change your nomenclature? ....."Your LCD is TM133XGA0301-1".
I'd forgotten this. Try googling this:TM133XG-A03-01
Whoooowee was I a lot more ignorant then I am now.

Here is the breakdown of the designation from a post on that thread by mnementh:
TM133XG is a standard definition for a common family of Sanyo-Torisan 13.3" LCD panels; I believe the TM delineates 4:3 aspect ration and 5V digital logic voltage; while the -A03 defines the chipset and related T-Con (sometimes built-in, sometimes a separate board). The last 2 digits are simply a revision number; in most cases, you can replace any LCD with one of a newer revision as a direct drop-in; occasionally it may have an additional mounting tab that needs to be removed.
I not sure whether there is going to be a problem with replacing the screen with say for arguments sake an A02 varaint rather than the A03, which are more easily available as they are fitted to Fujistu Lifebooks for example.
One Torisan popular screen is a TM133XG-02L07A. I have technical info for that screen and the TM133XG-A02-01 but not the "correct" TM133XG-A03-01 which would have been very helpful. If they are dimensionally the same, and take the same inverter voltage and the 20 pin connections are identical, am I likely to have any problems other than transferring all the rubber bits over from the original? -
The only issue I can see for sure is the possibility of an LED backlit version; there weren't very many produced in the 4:3 aspect however. You SHOULD be able to swap them; the odds are in your favor. But I'd wait for an auction that goes cheap enough that you're not going to be heartbroken if it's not the right panel, or look for an auction for a cheap damaged panel to get hands-on and verify that the leads/connector for the CCFL are the same and that it uses the same LVDS connector. Very often the only difference between two models is the length or connector of the CCFL cable; I've had good luck disassembling that connector and soldering the wires to the connector from the old screen.

Panel-ily. -
Well the cheap one has arrived. The most obvious difference being that there are additional frame mounts on the bottom. Looks like they are screwed on so that shouldn't be a problem.
Connected it all up and got a display at last! First impressions are that it is not as bright as the original damaged one but for the time being I'll trade that for having a functional screen. Not sure whether its possible to swop the whole outer metal panel or just the backlight to get it brighter.
So the challenge is to get all the original mountings of the old screen and onto the new. These are plastic and rubber so thats not as easy as it sounds.
I'll post back what if any differences I find. I am not saying its an ideal replacement but it appears to be dimensional similiar, works when connected and is readily available . -
Thought I would update this!
Basically I decided against trying to modify the cheap screen I bought. One of the problems on the CF-74 is the amount of dampers/buffers on the Lcd rear which looking at the Service manual need to be placed mm perfect! So I kept my eye on the only source of used CF-74's I could find in Europe. After a few abortive attempts I managed to purchase what I hoped would be a suitable donor.
When it arrived I was a bit concerned. The hinges had broken, the screen bezel was cracked and the whole lid was wrapped in clear tape. Was even more downhearted when I put power on it and there was no display. I then recalled that I read on here that some Panasonics do not boot without any Ram. Sure enough the Ram had been harvested. Put some in and was greeted with the dislay busting into life! Good times!
So the idea is to now transplant the good LCD into the other CF-74. Having removed the bezel I could see that this one had a touchscreen installed, however it had become detached at the top. Perhaps this is heresy on here but I decided to remove the touchscreen as I would be satisfied just to have a working LCD! Besides no guarantee that the TS functions and I thought that the bezels would be different. Unfortunately, there was no P/N on the good bezel to compare, although I can see no obvious difference.
The LCD is a Torisan 133XGA0301-3 with the L5S30348P00 P/N. If nothing else the TS has protected the LCD as it is in excellent condition. I also have a source of spares, including a working MB, a spare battery and some other bits that may come in handy. Think it might be BT equipped as well but to be honest I am a "Simplicity = reliability" kind of guy!
Moral of the story is that if you are patient, the right bits turn up eventually!
This Forum has proven to be an invaluable source of information and assistance, even if at first a seemingly insignificant post pays dividends later.
Next project, a CF-51! -
go with the cf-51 duo that can be cpu upgraded to a T7200 and ram 2-4 gb and a 320gb hdd. The ones that are OS 3.00 seem to have video ram up to 256mb which is nice. No touchscreen however like the cf-74....Driller
