I have a CF-74G Vista SP2 Shut down problems. After I updated it with SP1 it started up in 35 seconds and when I clicked shut down it shut down like any other Toughbook I have. I did 2 other updates and the same. Then I updated it to SP2 and that is where the problem is because it takes 3+ minutes to shut down. You can click "Shut Down" and it's like you did nothing. Then about 2+ minutes later it starts shutting down which takes another 1+ minutes to finish shutting down. This is the 4th time I have loaded Vista on it trying to figure out what is going on. I would just leave it with SP1 but I need Internet explorer 9 . I think explorer 7 or 8 was on it before but it would not let me go anywhere...not even to Microsoft so I could update Explorer "can not display page" or something like that. I really need this up and running since this is for my 12 year old Grand daughter. She came up at Christmas and this is the one she picked out so grandpa [IMG] needs this running

Something sounds familiar about an update causing that...Don't ask me more cause I don't have a clue.

Blair.... Not a fix but perhaps a work-around. On every computer I build and on all family member's PCs I always include 2 batch files on the desktop. A RESTART and a SHUTDOWN. I create batch files and give them snazzy icons... A red power button for shutdown and a green one for restart. Here's the syntax...

    Restart - shutdown.exe /r /t 00

    Shutdown - shutdown.exe /s /t 00

This will force shutdown anything in use and either shut down or restart your system. The cool thing is that if you have any unsaved work (Word Doc, Excel file, etc.) it will prompt you to save it before exiting.

The /s switch shuts down the PC... The /t switch is the timer (Normally set to 20 seconds) and makes it 00.

I have been using these for years and they always shut stuff right down... Or restarts...

You may want to experiment with the /f switch which closes all applications before shutdown... But then I am not sure if you will be prompted to save your work.

Please let me know if this works for your situation.

That reminded me of something, there is an addon to the sidebar that I used to use in Vista that did the same thing as Rick posted.I remember now I used it because it was much faster.

Well last night I got it up and running...The trick was to install the hotfix before SP2 for it to work.
    1. install Vista
    2. install all updates
    3. install SP1
    4. install Hotfix
    5. install SP2
    6. Do not install any more updates...turn off auto update.
